    Hi folks,

I'm looking at a 2005 Tacoma 4x4 with the TRD off road package. Crew cab, short bed. Exactly what I've been looking for. However, it has 166k miles on it. It's a craigslist seller who claims it has had regular oil changes and is in great mechanical condition.

2nd owner, was bought pre-owned from a dealer at 156k in 2017. Since then, it's been sitting in this guy's garage for the most part (10k from driving to camping spots etc). It includes a leer canopy and Thule roof rack.

All recalls are up to date and apparently a mechanic recently did some work to get it ready to sell.

The price for these things used have skyrocketed recently, and he's asking for $18,950. So, I'm calling out to the Tacoma World. Is this worth it? Is it too many miles regardless of whether it's been well taken care of? How much would you pay? Thanks.

Honestly, that price is laughable. I don't care what part of the country you are in. 19k for 166k miles on a 15 yr old truck? I paid $26.5 for mine in 2016 with 32,000 miles and it's a 2013. It's also a DCSB V6 4x4 which is the most desirable configuration.

If you’re the 1st owner, even 500,000 mile is fine cause you know what the truck has been through. As a second owner I wouldn’t try anything over 100,000 miles since you don’t know what’s occurred and how it was treated.

I agree with this for the most part. The only deciding factor is budget.

The guy said he's firm on the price so I'm gonna go ahead and scrap this one. I've had a tough time searching for a Tacoma. The price for used is insanely high right now. Thank you all for your help, the search will go on.

I've done a lot of research, but any tips on buying are always welcome!

    Thanks,

    Max

Expand your search. I bought a truck in Texas and I lived in Florida. $600 to ship it my way... Granted there's something to be said about buying sight unseen, but it wasn't super old and I bought from dealer with extended warranty so ... meh. But still, it may save you in the end to expand search.

Edit: Also CarMax will move cars for you for a price and typically give you some sort of warranty.

Good choice, way to high even though the truck looks nice in the pictures (except for the fake rainbow background)
Keep searching you will find what you want eventually.
You are correct though, costs are super high right now but that price is pretty crazy
good luck with the hunt and ALWAYS check the undercarriagefor rust

Edit- I bought a 2015 4wd manual for like 5k more just last year with pretty much no rust. Also bought a 1995 for less than 2k 10 years ago 2wd extended cab ..... just for reference

So, for the last 10,000 miles the vehicle has has regular oil changes??
2nd owners says this, but only bought it at 166,000miles, and it's now go 176,000miles.

Anyway. The truck looks good. But the price is high. Sure looks like he's trying to recoup the excess money that he spent 2 1/2 years ago. Plus some 05's had head gasket issues. Not all by any means though.
I'd keep looking because l don't think the seller is going to come down in price enough to make it worth it. It is a 15 year old truck, coming up to 16 years since the 2021s will be coming out soon.

    Good Luck

I think part of the problem is the fact he is selling from vashon. Keep looking, there is a lot to choose from in the greater seattle area.
