Just got back from a walk and took some pics of a wild patch of Jerusalem Artichokes.





These are native plants, widely cultivated by Indians for their edible tubers, long before Europeans arrived.

Mind you, they have nothing to do with Jerusalem and they ain't artichokes.

They were taken back to Europe and naturalized there.
The Italian name for sunflower, or Girasole, became a common name for it.
The French explorer Samuel de Champlain said the tuber tasted rather like an Artichoke.

So, with the genius of the English speaking peoples for mispronouncing foreign words...
...they eventually became known as, ta-da...Jerusalem Artichokes...
...because of course they would.

The tuber contains 2% protein, no oil, and little starch.
Rich in the carbohydrate Inulin, which does not cause a spike in Glycemy.
So its use as a folk remedy for diabetes was perfectly sensible.

 

So my neighbor will sometimes say he and his wife are going out to dinner (I usually smirk like this ---> ) and I ask him if he's wearing a suit. He's like...well no, and I say, get the fuck outta here with your formal acting self.

I had to work today at the paper mill. Shits really cranking up there so instead of the usual 12-1 pm quit, it was 4pm today. Then it was an hour ride back, dragging a load of giant rolls of shit paper.

 

Well that sucks.
