New here. Fun thread. Just retired my ‘03 Fuel 98 for a ‘20 Spark 910. Bikepack a ‘15 el Mar and captain a ‘00 Burley with my wife. ‘96 Serotta on roadie days. XC, flow and climbs are my bag. 54 YO - one broken hip, four metatarsals and a coccyx later, and I still love it. Have you posted and riding impressions / mini review of the Spur at all? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

I’d second this request. I feel like everyone’s been drooling over the Spur and as a short travel guy I’m all ears.

    Thank you!!

I still need some more time on it before I can really wrap my head around all the capabilities and limitations of this bike. I also just returned home after being away for two months, so I have to settle in a bit before I can really think about everything. But, here's a few initial impressions.

For starters, the bike is just fast as hell. Seriously, IT FUCKING RIPS. I stepped up from 27.5" to 29" wheels, so some of the speed and rollover was to be expected, but I really didn't expect THIS much extra quickness. It's also so damn light that it just pops off of every rock or ledge. I'm still dialing in the suspension, but I haven't found any real limits yet on the small/moderate jumps and ledges I've hit. Extremely smooth flow/jump trails (like Barn Burner in Knoxville) are some of the most fun I've ever had on a bike -- it just launches into the air and digs into the berms with seemingly no effort at all.

I intentionally downsized (to a medium) to achieve some of that nimbleness, but I don't think I lost much in the downhills as a result. I can understand wanting it to be a little more stretched out (with a Large) if all you do is head downward, but choosing to downsize also made climbing much more comfortable and efficient IMO. The bike feels exactly right for me, which is about the biggest compliment I can give it.

That said, there are a few cons that I plan to remedy right away with a few minor upgrades. For starters, I'm swapping in a 180mm rotor in the back to give the SRAM G2 brakes more surface. (I've already hit what feels like the limit of the stock 160mm rotor a few times). Second, I'm replacing the 175mm crank arms with 170mm arms because the rock strikes are a bit excessive with the stock 175 setup. Third, the pedaling really needs more engagement/efficiency, so I'm doing the 54T upgrade in the DT Swiss 350 hub that came with the DT Swiss XR 1700 wheelset. (I will ultimately purchase a custom carbon wheelset for the bike). Finally, I plan to switch to a Fox Transfer 175mm dropper -- the stock 150mm OneUp dropper on the medium simply isn't enough drop and actually leaves a good 4+" inches of unused dropper space -- which is really ridiculous IMO. (They really should have offered 170+mm droppers on the medium).

The bike certainly has limits -- I definitely wouldn't ride it in a real bikepark with really big hits -- but, for most of the XC/AM stuff I ride 99% of the time, the bike is everything I ever needed and then some. The improvements I mentioned above will hopefully make it near perfect for me. If it gets faster, it will be at the ludicrous stage compared to my previous full-squish bikes. lol

Once I've ridden it several more times, I'll be sure to post back with some more in depth thoughts. In the meantime, just know that I think this "down country" category IS everything a lot of people hoped it would be. Short travel 29ers are f'n legit, and bikes like this Spur or the Revel Ranger are probably going to take over for quite some time.

Got down to moab for a day. Rode slick rock and captain ahab, the booked it back up to SLC so my wife wasn't alone with our daughter too long.

Good weather, in the 80s, and shockingly quiet down there. We didn't see any other people on ahab. It was bizarre.

Awesome! You touched on everything I was curious about. One other thing, would it be a crime to throw a beefier fork on it? Like a 34 or pike 130/140mm? It sounds like the rear handles a good amount. I’m coming from a Django with 140/120mm.

I'm sure someone will test a 130mm fork on there at some point, but I personally wouldn't mess with the geometry of the bike at all. The SID itself maxes at 120mm, so it would have to be a Pike or Fox of some sort, and you're really just adding unnecessary weight at that point. If you're really looking for something beefier, then I'd probably just start with something designed for that instead of the Spur.

Hi, riders. Found these trails off of 2N10 near Snow Summit at Big Bear Lake, CA last weekend during a stay by that area on Labor Day weekend.5647F047-FFE5-425D-88CE-0EDA43607D9B.jpg Anyone know what trails are accessible to the public up there without having to pay for chair lift tickets or trespassing on Snow Summit’s property?

Good stuff man. How tall are you? At 5’10” I’m on the edge of M/L. I traditionally size down for a more playful bike. I’m currently on a size M 2018 Scout and it feels nice. For what I imagine wanting a Spur for it seems like sizing down is the way to go. Quicker and more playful in tight twisty stuff. If I’m really wanting to bomb DH it seems like I’d ride a different bike.

Last weeks trip out west. Didn’t get in as much riding as I would have liked but still had a blast.

    I'm somewhere between 5' 9.5" and 5' 10", depending on the day.

    Where is this at?

Yeah same for me. Did you ride a L ever? Have you ridden other modern geo bikes and what do you usually do for size? After the PB comments of the bike feeling long on climbs (for 5'10" tester) it really got me to thinking the M would be the way to go.
