Does anyone know if the only thing we have to worry about with lifts is the boot? Can we damage the axle itself if the boot is still intact?

Yeah, steep angles in the CV axles can make them more likely to bind esp in full droop. This is where OEM and high quality axles shine over cheaper aftermarket ones that are more likely to break in lifted applications. Not to mention OEM boots are of better quality than the what parts store axles come with. OEM axles are considerably better quality all around.

Some companies make aftermarket high quality chromoly axles like RCV, but they're ~$2k a set

Sheesh. I wonder how long mine will last before they rip if I leave them like this.

In my experience not very long, matter of days/weeks depending on how pressed against each other they are.

Those look like they have the boot slide mod done to them, I know that's an option with CVJ. Definitely helps prevent the fins rubbing

Will a re-alignment be necessary if I only loosen the collar 1 turn?

Yes. Any adjustments to your front ride height should be followed up with an alignment.

    something to keep in mind..

I just had to replace both CV front axles on my 06 due to the exact wear that is shown in many of these photos due to front lift and associated inner boot wear. I also had the notorious front diff bearing noise under 45 mph that disappeared with 4x4 engaged.

OEM Toy axles run near ~$400/ea and to install both by the dealership is ~$1600 (which includes the OEM axles).

That isn't the worst part. I found that the front OEM axles are out of stock in the entire USA due to covid and unavailable until who knows when with a backorder of 350+ already on the books. This occurred in late August of 2020.

I had to send my old axles to CVJ Axle and purchase remans which cost ~$450 (for both) with shipping costs 1/2 way across the nation, plus I installed them myself.

A easy way to determine if the inner boot is rubbing requires a high power light at close range on the lower boot fins to determine if contact is being made. Another suggestion of sliding a piece of paper through the gap is a great idea.

For a quick test on my 2021 AC TRD OR, I stuck a 1" spacer (2" lift supposedly) and got about 2" driver and 2 3/8" P from stock. Looking at the inner boot fins provided me, for my use, to go with less (a 1.65") front lift. The 2 3/8" P side was definitely making contact on the boot fins. The 2" D side was slightly making contact. Have decided based on my review to go with the Bilstein 6112 coilovers with clip 5/4 for 1.65" lift.

Easiest way to get an accurate height measurement for me was to measure the outside diameter of the wheel at lip edge (17.25" on my aftermarket wheels) and divide that by 2. (8.625") Now measure from the top of the wheel lip to the bottom of the fender and add that to half of the wheel diameter. This allowed a much more precise measurement than guesstimating the center of the hub and attempting to route up to the fender with the tire sidewall protruding.
