4X4 or 4X2? what should i get?

In the market for a brand new long term Toyota pickup. I am in the middle whether to get 4X4 or 4X2. Price difference is about $2,500 for the drivetrains. What’re some questions i should ask myself to help with the buying decision?

4x4 always.

 

always go with 4x4 with a truck! I got my '20 SR DC V6 4x4 for $32k - thought it was a decent price. It's the perfect truck for my needs.

 

Buy 4x4, hold value more better. Might need it, even though not at the moment. However more maintenance. I have my Tacoma for a daily driver, because of snow.

 

Where do I live?

 

4x4. No question.


Edit: S Texas, that changes things. If you only drive on pavement, 2wd would be fine. If you can afford it, still get the 4x4 tho

 

I think you should be asking how will you be using your truck. If you off road a lot, 4WD makes sense. However if you are on roads most of the time,you won’t need 4WD. Also what is the weather like where you live? If you deal with a lot of snow and ice, 4WD may be helpful.

I live in Texas and rarely go off road. 2WD is all I need. 4WD would have been nice once, but good off road tires and skilled driving can make up for it. Plus 2WD getA better gas mileage.

4x4 you will loose 2-3mpg and have more fluids to change, chasis to lube.

If you never leave the pavement, or gravel roads, then you don't need 4x4 and you're wasting money/gas. All these people saying "you must get 4x4" are not logical.
The vast majority of vehicles are 2wd and out of the 4wd vehicles, most of those never even need to engage the front end.

Make sense?
So, do you plan on going off of a road?
Do you have to drive on snow or ice?

I've regretted not getting a 4x4 on the only 2 2wd trucks I've had, their lack of capability was the reason they were sold when they were.

 

Where do you live? Where do you drive? If you have to ask if you need 4x4, I kinda suspect you don't need it.

Where I live and where I drive, a 2wd truck would be impractical as an only vehicle.

I’ll take a trail to go fishing or so every now and then. No snow in Southeast Texas.

 

I’m from Texas too, Southeast in particular. So definitely no snow or ice.

You are smart to ask the question. I find the answer depends on three key questions. There are others, of course, but I find these are the most important:

1) Where do you live? I see you are in Southeast Texas. I am not an expert on Texas but I have spent some time in various parts of your wonderful state (I am in NY). From what I have seen no way do you need 4WD. Not saying there are not places in Texas where it would be useful / important but for the most part you will be fine with a good set of tires and some weight in the back. I can't tell you how many guys I know in Northern Quebec who have 2WD and never get stuck in the snow or on very rocky trails. You will be fine.

2) What kind of driving will you do? Sounds like some soft trails here and there. Honestly, you will be fine with 2WD.

3) How long will you keep your truck? If you are keeping it for 10 years and not looking to trade it in then I would go with 2WD and save they money. If you see yourself thinking about not this truck but the next vehicle then the small amount of money you would spend for 4WD might be worth it as it will make your truck more valuable when you go to trade it in.

Overall though, in your situation, unless resale is a huge driving factor, you should do well with 2WD.

 

I had to use my 4H today in the middle of suburbia.

I was turning around in a neighborhood, and misjudged how far of a drop off a ditch was, and how close it was to the road. My frontend got stuck, and my rear couldnt pull me out because the roads were slick from a recent rain, couldnt get traction as there was no weight keeping them hard-pressed to the ground. Kicked in 4x4, and the truck reversed right out of there as a lot of the trucks weight had transferred to the front wheels, and they were able to get traction in the soil.

Could I have gotten by without 4x4? yeah, probably. I keep traction boards in the truck. But switching into 4H took probably what would have been a 5 minute process of trying to get out by getting out of the truck, fetching the boards, positioning the boards, getting in the truck, reversing, getting out of the truck collecting the boards, putting them back, and getting back in the truck, down to 45 seconds of just turning a button on and off.
