What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Probably the wrong thread but oh well.


Where does everyone bet their antenna stuff? I need one for my icom and one for my gps. Gonna drill holes and mount them that way.

 

I did some overdue maintenance on my '96 Tacoma. Last time I went for a longer local trip, I noticed it had a leak from the V/C gasket. I also noticed that it was dirtier in the engine bay than I like, and some vacuum hoses were cracked. So, I ordered the parts from Rock auto (note: It's way, way easier to get the vacuum hoses in bulk from Advance auto or Autozone than try to order from RA). So, I removed the V/C. cleaned it, cleaned the intake hoses to the injection system, cleaned the engine bay, underside of hood, and then replaced all the vacuum hoses. I did the plugs while i was at it. Dried everything off, and it runs very smoothly.

I did some inspection of the brakes and underside. I figure I should order new rubber brake hoses, clutch slave cylinder & hose and replace them soon.

I see why they started this thread, it's very satisfying getting all this done. It took me most of the weekend, but I wasn't rushed.

Thanks man... I don't think I would use them for my 3rd gen but they are pretty nice... Gonna beat them up and see whats up... For 300 or 320 whatever they cost.. its half the price of a name brand uca... im all about that..!

 

Went to Food lion for groceries today, and was looking for some Colgate Etra-Whitening toothpaste, but they only had the regular Whitening (non gel) so I snagged a tube. I spent more time than @Fernando did. I did 3 different coats and let them all set for a while, then I scrubbed them with an old toothbrush. They don't look perfect, but you be the judge. I know there's an improvement, because all the scales are gone. I can't believe that this toothpaste took those yellow hardened flaky looking scales off, but it did. I also washed my truck, it needs a good buffing and waxing desperately.

We'll take them for a test drive this weekend. I wonder if it would have turned out better if I had sprayed some clear coat on them.

 

Thank you, here’s a question, looking around I’ve seen some fender mounts or other options, do these perform worse than a roof mounted antenna? I heard mounting antennas on a big flat metal surface is better and also height wise, any truth to this?

 

Nope. Hit them with a sander and clear coat. If you dont like them, buy new ones for 100 bux. I think im going that route with the civic. My ocd doesn't like them. Lol. But they do look better than before

 

So you did this after the toothpaste cleaning, dude you need to confess this shit before hand, so the rest of us know. I thought you only did the toothpaste fix. I watched a you tube video, where his came out kinda cloudy looking like mine. After he put two coats of clear coat, they looked really clear. Come on Man!!!

 

how many gallons does it hold. Are you installing a sink or a shower in the truck.

 

Added a new battery holder to the AGM battery I got a few weeks ago.

 

yeah, it's true.roof is best, hood is second best. The fender/hood mount is easier tho.

 

Lol. No man. On the civic i only did toothpaste as posted. But in the past i USE to have good luck with sanding and clear coating. Last two sets i fucked up. After doing research, i shouldn't have wet sanded with too much fine grit.... Thinking back to my older days, i would just scuff then sand. Hope that makes sense. Lol

@Fernando , I happy with it for now. I have a 3M kit that has all the sanding pads for a drill, some wipes when your finished, and then more wipes with clear coat on them. It got good reviews, so I might try it later this year, or wait until spring. It will depend on how the "Toothpaste" holds up. Out of curiosity, what year is the civic. My very fist car was a 1974 Civic with a 55hp 4 cylinder engine. It ran so clean that no catalytic converter was needed. 4 speed, 55mph air conditioning, and that little car got 28-30 mpg on the highway at 65-70 mph. I bet the top speed was just about 90 with a good tail wind, maybe a little more.

They are adjustable and I’m very impressed with the quality of it! Worth it.

 

Not even a year later and more work has been done to the truck and i have it back

 

I just used that kit, worked great!
