ya, an auto 2.7 from 96 on 35s doesen't like those 10% grades very much


haven't ridden single track down hill in close to 2 months, and did a lithium lap on Saturday on the pass...holy hell my hands were so sore, felt like such a puss.

 

Most of my frames are size medium, but I did just ride a size Large Ibis Mojo3 for four years. (Sold the Ibis to buy the Spur)

The Reach and Wheelbase numbers on the medium Spur directly compared with most of the size Large bikes that Pinkbike tested in their recent shootout, so I really don't understand why Mike Levy thought the size Large Spur was the right choice for comparison. I think both sizes would work well in different situations, but the medium felt like the right choice for me because it's also nimble in the climbs. Levy complained about the wheelbase of the Large being a bit too long in his climbing tests, but I don't get that sensation at all with my medium. It climbs like a damn billy goat through all the techy stuff -- especially compared to my Ibis, which was never an ideal climber IMO.

At the end of the video, he said that he would try to test a size Large later and compare the two. He hasn't posted that comparison yet, but seeing him completely shred on the medium was enough to convince me that it would work just fine for the type of riding I do -- and it has done exactly that.

That said, if someone is already used to really long bikes, or spends most of their life skipping the climbs and heading downhill, the large may be the better choice. Possibly? I really don't know.

Its a downcountry bike. To me that doesn't mean a downhill oriented bike thats just shorter on travel. Its a beefed up modern geo short travel (dare say XC ) bike thats kicks ass on the downhill, and can still climb effectively.

 

On my Specialized Stumpjumper I had the RaceFace oval on it. Also went from a 28 round to a 32 oval. Major improvement in the climbing department. The new Yeti climbs so good that I haven't got one for it yet, but thinking I would get an Absolute Black and see what the difference is on a bike that climbs well already.

 

I'm sure I'll be quite comfy on a M Spur....the geometry fit numbers and wheelbase are nearly identical to my M Scout. I came off a Pivot Mach 5.7 in M which was for sure too small...old school fit with really short reach. So the Scout was a "big" bike when I bought it. I am curious to ride a bigger bike though, because I won't pretend to know I just happened to land on the perfect bike geo this last time.

 

been spending most of my time on the road bike these days. kind of digging the change of pace for now.

Looks great, I do have a question because I'm unfamiliar with striders. Do the kids stand on the swing arm where it's flat when riding down hills and such?
All I've ever saw kids do is pick their legs up and let them dangle.

 

This is sick! I've started researching these for my daughter and I'm totally gonna have to follow suit on the paint job. My wife will probably insist on it being a pivot.

To answer your question, both. My daughter kept her legs out most of the time while cruising at speed or going downhill, but would use the platform from time to time as well.

If I was starting from scratch it’d be tough not to look at the Commencal options. They're obviously more expensive than a Strider, but are pretty damn cool in my opinion.

If I wanted all new stickers and pin stripes for my Transition Spur, would that be something you could do? I'm thinking of pealing everything off and going full custom...

 

I am 5'9" and I ride the medium in the new scout and it fits me okay. I unfortunately did not get the chance to ride a size large scout and I was coming off a large 2018 rocky mountain altitude. The fit between the large altitude and the medium scout is nearly identical and they share very similar reach numbers. I bet you would fit fine on a medium spur and a large would be okay too.

I know thats a bunch of words to say you would be great on either.
