I recently installed the URD Stage 2 clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel. Along with that, we did an OEM throw-out/release bearing replacement in my 2016 off-road MT.
About 3k miles after the install, I'm pretty sure I'm hearing the failure of the throw out bearing.
When the clutch is to the floor, I hear a metallic whurring noise, which can be inconsistent, but happens more often than not, usually not until things warm up to operating temps. Once the gear is engaged, the sound disappears.
My question is, when we go in to investigate, what should we be looking for? What could cause a premature failure of the throw out bearing? Could it POSSIBLY be anything else? Dropping the tranny sucks! :annoyed:
Also, bonus question - is there a pilot bushing?

@subrat just went through a similar, but different thing. It wasn't the TOB.

I'm digging in his history (which now sounds creepy lol) and i don't see much. I'll have to wait for him to chime in.
Really hoping i'm not dropping the transmission this weekend :)

wow, well that is no coincidence and @Gadget@URD will want to know about it. he just heard about mine two weeks ago. you described my experience exactly, except mine didn't change so much from temp change but instead truck position/driveline tension.

it's not the TOB [most likely]. you can get more detailed info from Gadget about it. but yes it sucks you will have to open her back up.

there's a wavy washer that nobody has given a name i've heard yet, but it's a little thing and needs replacement, and from what i'm hearing possibly a redesign but ask Gadget about it.

i was told to replace that by URD and they sent me another. i installed that with another new TOB although the last one was apparently fine, but no risks. it all came with a warning that this noise issue could come back and if it does, well that sucks. but there is no actual problem with degrading components or anything. due to Covid problems, i was stuck with that noise for a few months. it was loud for 2-3 weeks then got a lot quieter and then became inconsistent. but the bead-in-a-bowl would come back sitting in traffic and stuff and was fully annoying.

contact Gadget directly, tell him your deal and tell him it appears to be the same thing Tandem in Ft.Worth dealt with in my truck earlier this month. the labor here just sucks but this is a pay to play cost.

Mine has been making a noise all most from new like you describe generally when it's cold out. It has around 120,000 miles on it it ain't going to get a new one until I have to replace the clutch.

Great info - thanks. Gadget has been really helpful to me in the past and i look forward to what he has to say. If there's no risk to degrading other components or something catastrophically failing on me, then so be it. But i frequently go exploring alone and the reason i beefed the clutch assembly was to minimize yet another point of failure.
Pay to play - you're so right lol.
And i want to kind of walk back my temp comments because i drove the truck 4 hours home yesterday, and when i backed it into the driveway, no noise! So i agree, it must be driveline related just depending on how the truck is sitting.

I'll reach out to Gadget and update you guys when i can. Thanks for your input!

good luck. one more thing... i did do the replacement i described above and after about 10 days of hard driving it's all solid and no noise or abnormal NVH. of course it may be early to sign off.

Gadget said he thinks it's the TOB from my symptoms. Local shop quoted $750. I'm not willing to drop the tranny (again) without a lift. Last time doing it on the ground sucked. Decisions decisions

was he willing to send you the wavy ring we mentioned? i know he's seeing it different from mine, but it's a cheap part and if i were you i would ask him again about it. it's a big job so cover all the possibilities especially if cheap.

Good point. Let me mention it to him tomorrow and see if I can get a hold of that thing.
We plan to do it this weekend or next. Thanks for the recommendation

One thing i forgot to ask you guys, and Gadget yesterday was this....

On the URD pressure plate, there is a metal ring within the fingers. What is that? I understand it runs against the TOB?

Belleville washer? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belleville_washer I have used wavy Bellevilles in addition to the conicals. Calculations for use are a bitch tho. Good help you just did.

No, I am asking if this is the name of his washer he replaced. Not an additional component. Sorry for confusion. :)
