Out sampling the air in the Mount Baker-Snoqulamie National Forest after delivering furniture to my daughter. She lives on the east side of the Cascade mountains in Washington, and I live on the west (wet) side. There are wildfires in her area and, of course, all the wildfires in Oregon and California are contributing smoke as well.

If you can contribute something please consider doing so for the people that have lost their homes. This fire season has been a record breaker, and it's only just getting started.

@EricOutside. Pictures are beautiful but an eerie reminder of the devastation caused by these fires. My daughter lives on the East side of the mountains as well. I am minutes from the Puget Sound but couldn’t see the neighbors house this morning. South of me my 86 year old father is surrounded by several of the Oregon fires and is house bound because of the fire and smoke. Thoughts and prayers to you and all who are struggling through these perilous times. Will also look for opportunities to give back to those in need! Stay safe!

Sounds like you're on top of it then. Yea, I would never go to anyplace like that without some sort of tracker app. Google tracks is nice but check out this site (or others like it) to find the best app for you. https://www.backpacker.com/gear/10-best-hike-apps

I would look for apps that let you download maps of the areas you intend to go to. By downloading the maps beforehand you can almost operate in airplane mode which saves your battery. Look for apps that allow you to transmit your location/path to others even if your phone is off. Oh, a solar battery charger should be a must. I have this one.

I like it because you can open it, plug your phone in and use your phone right away and not have to wait for the battery to charge up. That is as long as it's in the sun. It has a light too.

These would also be good out in the desert simply because you won't always have things to burn for a signal fire at night.

Bit confused how apps could transmit location while the phone is off? Don't understand how that's a thing as it seems like you'd need cell service/battery power to do something like that, no?
I'll track location with Gaia and have a dual battery wired up as of this weekend so battery juice shouldn't be an issue anymore. Looked at your link and see that Cairn app described and sounds like it uses an algorithm to track/predict where you'd be vs knowing right where you are if you were without cell service. I do like the idea of uploading a track though and having it alert friends if you're overdue. Do you use it yourself?

 

phone isn't off, just the antennas in the phone that transmit phone calls/texts/data. The GPS chip still works in Airplane mode.

But yea, if the phone is off completely, nothing works.

 

I'm sure if you agree to the right amount of agreements you can get your phone to do just about anything you want.

But we're all responsible adults with plenty of sense and we don't need all these safeguards.

I haven't had the need to use any of these types of apps. Mainly because the malls I go to have multiple entrances so no matter what side of it I am on I am good. I've always been a sort of a paranoid plan ahead kind of guy though so I can see myself making a lot of arrangements to ensure my survival. I even have the emergency notification feature turned on, on my phone. I have activated it a couple times by mistake. Luckily the people on my list are tolerant of my stupidity.

If all else fails you can hit my Brother in Bishop, @Hobbs. He's a great guy always willing to rescue or recover out there.
