My wife has a 2018 Tacoma that has a recall on it for the engine shutting off which she says has happened a few times. My issue is that Toyota is not fixing the issue claiming they don't have the parts to fix it. Then they start in about Covid and all that.

Well this vehicle has been sitting now for several months because she is afraid to drive it. Nothing like having a $40k vehicle you can't drive.

I'm at a loss of what to do about this. Is anyone else experiencing this? Any advise? Could you even sell a vehicle that you know has a recall in place, not that I really want to get rid of it.

    Thanks,

If its the fuel pump recall, I believe they are supposed to give you a rental till they have a fix for it. Then your truck will just sit on their lot, but you'll have one of their cars to drive.

They have mentioned a rental from Hertz to her the last time she talked to them but I'm not too interested in a rental car. I'm not letting them sit my vehicle on the back of their lot for months either, at least while I have it is garaged.

I have the fuel pump recall on my 2019, dealer said they would notify me once the part comes in. No problems here so far.

I'd get a rental and tell em I'm not making payments till I get my truck back. Be firm and assertive. Or whatever your idea of fair is. Talk to em. Talk to managers, call corporate, make it happen.

If this is the case, then they wont be motivated to fix it ASAP.

They give you a rental, then they have to pay for that rental and will be rushed to fix it.

I mean at this point, you'll just be waiting until they get the part.

    this and that...
technically they did offer a solution to you in the meanwhile. i know it sucks, but tbh this whole climate situation sucks as well. either you can take them up on it and have a vehicle to be driven on their dime or you can continue to have your wifes vehicle sit and you be out of one mode of transportation. if it was me i would take the rental. that in and of itself puts you into queue in their workload. what happens when they start working again AND THEN you bring your wife vehicle in? youll be at the back of the line. anyhow, hope you get it situated.

I bought a good year of Tacoma so I haven't had much drama at dealers. But after being firm and direct with service advisers and managers in the past, I've never felt like I was getting taken advantage after one of their fuck ups. No one is saying be a dick. But go in there and have a conversation with intention and be firm. Plus, homeboy hasn't even talked to anyone, sounds like his wife is handling all the Dealer interactions.

Oh no, their still taking advantage of you, their just not making it obvious. Everyone gets screwed by the dealer no matter how firm you are, your a forced customer for at least 3 years 36k miles. Even after warranty is up, your still trapped for certain things.

    They're ***

Agreed, obviously nothing is free. But let's just agree that if we're *all* being taken advantage of, then that's the baseline. Do u wanna be the guy who has to buy their own rental and provide their own replacement parts or do u think u should be fairly "made whole" in the time it takes for them to figure out what their fix is?

I don't think they offered me a solution, the issue isn't lack of transportation the issue is I have a vehicle I purchased that I'm not using because they can't supply parts. Not a dealer issue this is a Toyota issue.

In the mean time Toyota continues to build new Tacomas where are they getting parts to put those together? Must not really be a supplier problem if they can source those parts.

I would take their rental if I had a place to store it. I would also be much more interested if they were offering a new Tacoma or 4 Runner for a while.

It seems they have little consideration for their current customers which could easily turn into former customers. Would you buy a vehicle in the first place if you weren't sure they would be able to supply parts for it to keep you running?

I mean, I was the first person in this thread who said that he should be getting a free rental. Right now there is no fix for the recall, so theres not much to do other than take a rental and drive it around. No amount of pushing will get the fix any faster as its not the dealership that provides the fix, toyota does, the dealer just puts in the new part.

And you see that as problem how? The dealer didn't have any issues with selling her a vehicle. Although I was there when we finished the deal.

Agreed. But there's no way I'm making a month of payment for a vehicle I'm not driving. It's just not gonna happen for me. I'm not gonna make two months payment while they figure out what's going on. I gave you the money, u give me the vehicle. No vehicle, no money. It's not even a debate at that point lol
