What’s up y’all, just wanted to see if anybody with more experience than me with exhausts knows what their talking about. I’m going to do my exhaust soon, and I’m looking for some good recommendations. At first I was thinking muffler delete as seen in this video,https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6iQiCvmOBXE
but other videos with the same exhaust setup sounded like absolute garbage. Then I was thinking about open headers, such as https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xNsg7PPWw0g

but that would be illegal in my state, which would suck but it’s not a dealbreaker. If anybody had any experience with these, or recommendations in general that would be VERY appreciated. Videos are even better:thumbsup:

I have a TRD catback and am happy with it. It’s not too much and sounds deep / throaty enough. Also one piece and bolts on pretty much.

EDIT: no drone on mine as many aftermarket as well, as noted above ^

What would you rate the loudness of that system out of 10? Sorry if I put you on that spot I’m just curious

What’s your goal? Sound? Loudness? HP?

Not much HP to gain on these trucks via the exhaust. On my first tacoma I just had a muffler shop cut out the stock muffler and weld in a flowmaster 40 and it sounded pretty good. But on my current Tacoma I’m happy with stealth mode stock.

AFE catbacks are loud if that's what you like. Ditch the cats and it gets even louder and raspier

I'm running their side pipes on my truck. I added a vibrant resonator to tame the drone down some. Still drones pretty bad because the exit is right under the cab before the rear wheel

I had a local muffler shop replace my stock muffler with a flowmaster 40 as well.. I do like the sound of it.. but it’s not crazy loud..

I’d say maybe like a 3.5-4 low RPM.. higher RPM maybe like a 6? 6.5?

I enjoy it because it’s not subtle, it’s present. But it’s not too much which would annoy me.

I recently discovered a 3 " hole in my muffler and replaced the factory system with a Gibson exhaust. Super easy install and decent sound. I'm quite happy with it.

Like others have said, no six cylinder will sound great, but this one certainly isn't bad.

I don't understand the desire for louder exhausts. It's a sausage fest party that perpetuates. Women aren't interested in your exhaust. I hate Harleys, don't want to hear them from 3 blocks away. Now worse than ever are jackasses in pickups with loud exhausts. Noise pollution. I'm seeing and hearing the same shit on lakes with assholes intentionally making any kind of boat motor stupidly loud. It's pathetic.

Loud exhaust has its roots in the "Look at Me" syndrome.

    Stock or Magnaflow or Flowmaster.

You won't gain performance or power. Just gain noise.

I think part of the "straight pipe" Harley concept is to let distracted drivers know they're in the area.

    Yeah....right.

That thinking only works if you are BEHIND the bike.

I have the TRD on mine and agree. If 0 is stock and 10 is open headers, this is a 3-4. I can easily have a phone conversation going up a hill with the windows opened.

but as others mentioned, the 4.0 is a V6 down low torque motor. It does not sound like anything special.

I’m a believer in a good sounding exhaust that doesn’t sound like I’m compensating (no offense to anyone with super loud aftermarket exhausts) or trying to make my 4.0 sound like something it isn’t. A good exhaust note and moderate noise is more than enough for me.

I feel like all the TRD catback does is allow the V6 to make noise, rather than change the noise a whole bunch and make it louder. Idk though, this is the first exhaust I’ve put on a vehicle. Tbh I’m glad I didn’t go aftermarket or any louder. But it’s all subjective.

I have a flow master super 10, doesn’t gain any performance but sounds mean.
    I’d say 10, 44, or TRD.
I’d probably have kept it stock if the truck was stock but it’s not so I just said F it

Stock. My muffler rotted out and I replaced with a flowmaster (it was cheaper than stock) and it drones at low RPM which makes talking on the phone nearly impossible, and that's with ~95% Kilmat coverage on the floor and doors.

I've been meaning to get a cat back from a junkyard to replace it with, I just haven't done it yet.
