I'm not saying change up what they're doing. I'm saying offer something more IN ADDITION to. Don't make something that only appeals to an off roader in place of what sells everyday to everyone. I'm not saying that.

You can literally say that about anything. No car maker is gunna make something everyone thinks is perfect. People will always complain about something.

Emissions laws. The entire fleet offering has to meet a certain average emission output, and it isnt worth throwing that average for a (relatively) tiny number of diesel fanboy purchases.

You guys in here are missing my point. I know Tacomas sell more than any other truck. I got it, reliable, well priced, resale value... They dominate the mid-size world. I own one myself for these same reasons. I'm saying give me something new IN ADDITION to what you already off. Don't change it, just give me on thing that is more off road specific than what the majority of everyday people want.

No. I would rather make them even more reliable and durable.

Why spend the money for tooling and R&D on that stuff? Why not a better transmission or A.D.D? Maybe better radiator support or better radiator?

I have a manual so I don't have any transmission problems so I can't attest to that.

I don't understand the reason behind buying an expensive truck to tear up offroad, so this whole thing just makes me o_O

That and I'm anti-gimmick. Give me reliable, cheap to maintain and well tested.

I totally regret making this thread. I apologize for making false accusations that Toyota is struggling to sell trucks. LOL

Alright, you are the head of R&D of Toyota. You have a budget. You can choose one of the two projects because you can't afford both... One is your wiz bang off roader with a diesel. The other is a better drivetrain for the whole Tacoma lineup. Choose.

Then you should be wanting them to fix your reverse gearing so you can back up a trailer without slipping the clutch. My Tacoma was a manual and it would go 95 mph in reverse and still have more to go...

No. Posts like this kill me.

Toyota has its reputation for a reason. Plain and simple. Anyone who actually 'wheels' their truck, or does the type of stuff you typically see here on TW, they dont want extra fancy bullshit and they certainly dont want the price tag. I think thats kind of what makes this TW community so fun is that most people like to make their truck their own and take pride in doing so. Whats the fun of having a rig when anyone can go down and order the exact same thing from the dealer?

If you want to be a Jeep guy who spends $70k on a vehicle and some silly looking mods, and only ever drive it to the mall and back, go right ahead. Thats totally fine. But I dont think that mentality will ever fit here in the land of Toyotas.

And I guess just one last thing, a front locker option would be cool, but I think manufactures have to be very realistic about how many people will actually use it (going back to price and also reliability). I would bet most people wouldnt even know when to engage a front locker.

Sorry, one more thing.. 705 hp in a truck is just absurd. And I like Dodge. But that has no place doing the type of stuff most people on here do. I just dont understand the hype. If you're actually in the desert doing pre-running / trophy truck sort of shenanigans I feel like you would build your own.

But the taco was never a luxury vehicle. Its always been light duty simple work truck. Dont think that will change anytime soon. They have too many fancy things as it is imo.

What evidence do we have that they are doing either? As far as I know, everything mechanically is the same for 2021 as its been since the 2016 introduction of the 3rd Gen. I understand your point completely and the real world doesn't work like "diesel fan boys" want it to, but I think the diesel powered Tacoma is appealing to a pretty big audience. Maybe not.

We are trying to say that this is not how corporations think. Phrase your wish list like it's a business analysis case. Off-road stuff is pretty and shiny and makes us feel all warm and fuzzy, but will it sell more Toyotas? Probably no. Not when Toyota absolutely owns the market with what they have already.

Yeah, FWIW, Toyota DID used to put a diesel in their predecessor to the Taco.... My papa bought one brand new in 1982 in bright yellow to make the trip from Waycross to Brunswick every day working for the National Guard. Got it in yellow so it would be easy to see. Although my papa has passed, the truck still runs... mechanical fuel pump just needs rebuilding.

Anything higher trim than an SR5 seems pretty luxurious to me.

Unfortunately, VW and Mercedes pretty much ruined the diesel market in the US for years to come, except for the working drivers with the one ton and up crowd. Dodge's baby diesel is not that great.
