I keep mine coated with Woolwax...and I'd love to see some pics of hitch receivers (any make or model) that gets used on the regular that doesn't have surface rust.

Ouch! All Jeeps trend toward the doorless icon, perhaps? That Jeep doesn't look old enough to have rusted out.
Edit: okay, I saw your subsequent post about rolling in saltwater. You're aggressive with your toys.

You would think. But that Jeep was 13 years old in the picture. Sold it to a buddy with 183k miles on it in November 2019, about 2.5 years later. Underbody looked great - probably due to all the leaks lol.

And yup - the ramp I use is terrible during low tide. Sometimes all four wheels in the water at launch.

Had mine burnt, blasted, and re-powdercoat painted 2 years ago. It’s got some rust/flake in the common problem area.

I'll see if I'll grab a pic from my buddy that still owns the Jeep. I'm not terribly bothered with surface rust but this paint chipped right off. I was pretty surprised it didn't just slowly rub away like safety chain attachment points.

2 years ago. Looks a hell of a lot better than mine - more evidence that Toyota's paint is cheap. Oh well. Guess I'm just fixing it up myself.

I also think the chipped/flaked paint is more a function of hitting the opening with the shaft as you put it in. I try to be careful with putting it in, but I always seem to bang the edge of the opening on my way in. There's a joke in there somewhere.

Just redid my skid plates. Steel wool, POR15 degreaser, POR15 metal prep, POR 15 itself and call it good. They have a little kit on Amazon for 20 bucks. Gets you some brushes and a set of gloves too LOL

You are not being crucified. You are being ridiculed. There is a difference.
Spray a little paint on it and move on.

I keep mine absolutely loaded up with fluid film. No rust yet, and I use it a lot in the winter to tow snowmobiles. I'd scrape off the major rust, hit it with rust reformer and then black rustoleoum, and then just keep it properly coated and lubed with fluid film, woolwax, etc.

The hood latch pin on mine flaked and rusted, all within a year and 18k miles. These guys can make fun all they want, but these examples are some hoopty-level lack of QC on Toyota's part IMO and I agree with you. These trucks aren't $25k new, mine stickered at over $40k, and I don't think that kind of chintzy shit is acceptable at that price point.

Thanks for the rec. Looks like something I can get some use out of for sure. I was wondering what I could do to get it to rattle around less. I see anti-rattle brackets to bolt onto it. Might do something like that.

I doubt Toyota makes or paints the trailer hitch. Time for a repair and more fluid film.

My 2001 oem tundra hitch had to be powder coated...it looked newer than the truck after 19 years. Only rust was on the very inside of the receiver.
