    Hey all

bout to pull the trigger on a rack and would love your input. The prinsu I love the look and utility of but the gobi looks to be a bit more rugged. Is this accurate? I would probably be using the rack for occasional lumber as well as the normal gear holder for off-roading. Would love any input you may have!!!!

    cheers
    Joey

I have the Martin Off Road. It is well made and can carry pretty much any normal off road gear w/o issues. It was quite a bit cheaper than the Prinsu, is powder coated aluminum, and is made by a small business fab shop in the US. Very personal service from a TW member, Gage Martin, @gmartin284 Check out his website at www.martinor.com

Where are you located? I have a GOBI stealth w/o moonroof that I want to sell. It will come with rigid light bar and flood lights. save on the wait time and willing to sell cheap.

Here are a few with front, back and side views. It mounts securely using the stock mount holes, and I have been through torrential rains with no leaks. I am happy with it, and the customer service from Gage was exceptional.

It is very similar, I actually purchased and installed the Prinsu Wind deflector strip on the Martin. It fit perfectly. 143B3B34-BE78-4D72-A259-9FAC6285CCBA.jpg

I'd go with Gobi...depending on what you're putting up there. I've realized that racks without side rails just means you need more straps to hold stuff down. I can shove so much firewood and other camping supplies up on my Gobi Ranger rack and just got a big net to keep everything down. I sold my Prinsu for the Gobi. Glad I did cause the Prinsu wasn't really seeing any real use other than a lightbar holder.

The Gobis are very nice racks, but three times the price of the Martin, and unaffordable for me with a more limited budget. I’ve not really found it to be much of an issue to strap things down, but I’m sure others would feel the additional cost worth it.

Nice, I wasn't aware of this brand. Purely based upon logo alone it is now at the front of my list. I hate the Prinsu and Victory 4x4 logos, and UpTOP is a little too "extra" for my tastes.

True, I was more responding to OP since OP seems to be considering them despite the cost.

The other benefit is that Gobis are made out of steel, which is much stronger than the aluminum that the Prinsu racks are made out of. I did manage to bend my Prinsu, which was a bit disappointing.

Wow! That’s surprising! I have strapped a lot of different things on the Martin and never even thought about bending either the rails or cross members. I don’t know what the maximum recommended weight is but I have stood on the cross members without issue, and I would not have any concerns about mounting a RRT on the rack. Maybe I need to be a little more careful when I’m up there. That being said, while steel is stronger, aluminum is lighter and doesn’t rust, however that may not be an issue for many.

My vote is for the Gobi... but you have to consider your use case. The bar racks are great for minimal wind noise and mounting pelican style cases and other offroad gear. Gobi however is an absolute tank. For the Taco, it’s somewhat small in actual footprint, but I love mine and the look. I got the stealth version and still need to mount my light bar. If you’re looking for the old school look, get the ranger and some nice KC lights. First one I had was on my FJ and I worked it regularly for probably 6+ years. Not a single issue with it. I know I’ve had 1200lbs on it once.

I also went with a Martin, mainly because of lead time but the price difference was also a big plus. They were great to work with and the rack is high quality, my only complaint is that the cross members are not quite the same spec as other similar style racks (slightly smaller channels), so it was kind of a pain to find hardware that fit for common accessories (I actually just ended up ordering a couple extra members from tnutz.com for my mounting points).
