Toyota Needs to Step Up!

I would like to nominate ROAD DOG as Tacoma World's official Poet Laureate.

 

Toyota has plenty of industrial diesel engines thag meet tier 4 emission standards. Why they haven't made the shift into the car market blows my mind. The 1DZ Would be a great fit just transmission adapting would be hard.

By the time the 4th gen comes out the chassis of the 3rd gen will be almost 20 years old. Hasn’t changed since 2005. Aside from cosmetics, the 3rd gen is a second gen with a different power train.

 

Price point the good years are cheaper and a better tire for mostly on road use like 99.9% of the trucks lol. Jeep sells you a Wranger with BFGS and a crate lift but rest of the vehicle is a pile of shit.

 

Im sure you are right, but still those tires dont belong on a "Off road" truck IMHO.

Even if it is just on the Pro. I'm a proud OR owner and even I don't understand why the OR and Pro have the same tires.

 

I’m going to say this very politely, careful what you wish for a diesel platform for the Tacoma stateside. There’s a reason Toyota won’t do it here and it’s because the strict US emissions so they are smart if you ask me.

As a former ZR2 diesel owner myself, I can tell you all the vehicles you mentioned won’t be worth a crap in 10-15 years. Half won’t be running and if they are Maintenance costs will be significantly higher than the Tacoma in my opinion.
I, like you am a hardcore Toyota guy. I have had at least 10 different Tacoma trucks dating back to 1986. However, I wanted to try that diesel hype everyone on this forum has been drooling about for the Tacoma here in the US. So giving it a try, the only diesel available was the GM twins in the midsize market. Got the ZR2 because I like my fair sharing of off-roading and exploring. Long story short, it was complete garbage. The bones of the Diesel engine were great but all the emissions requirements really chocked the life out of it. So many sensors and blah blah blah. What a waste. Came back to my Tacoma and never looked back. The same would happen with Toyota, they would make an awesome diesel only to have the life choked out of it by the strict regulations here. I think people would HATE it. Just my 2 cents. Take care.

 

Id like to know this too. So a pro you get different shocks, same size wheel just black with the same tires as a base offroad.... agreed the Pro needs BFGS stock in atleast 265

 

Yes 100%. IMO pro should at least come with better tires and with slightly more power. Toyota could have added at least 30 hp to that 3.5L to make it a "special" model.

 

It used to be that the guy with the 80K Denali or whatever was Mr. Moneybags, an old retired guy or some lunatic who signed on for payments he could barely afford.

Now it seems like every full-size on the lot is fully optioned King Denali Longhorn Ranch 1794 Edition XD. The only people buying basic trucks are commercial fleets.

many have had goooood experiences with diesels

those ' TDI ' diesels that were cheaters have been Reprogramed

they cant sell em fast enuf

NO ! had issue with the engines or reliability

they had ' Cheater ' software

i know 2 folks personally that have the Reprogramed Passats

they love the power & near 50mpg !!!!!!

no less 60-65% of many vehicles sold in europe Are DIESELS !!!

if they were crap the major car makers would give up on em

 

You love your truck. You're a die hard Toyota fan. Sounds like Toyota doesn't need to change a thing.

Honestly, the power doesn't bother me. I mean it does have a cat back exhaust and an optional (I believe) cold air intake. But it would mimic the Raptor a little more if it did have a special motor.

 

Yes overseas, they are great no doubt. All I’m saying is here, they are regulated to much to be a reliable option.

 

Yes, I've heard that the baby Duramax is awesome, but the DEF system, not so much. But the EPA is exactly why manufacturers can't simply bring motors over from overseas. The Duramax had to be completely overhauled from the original Thailand model. I've seen some diesel swapped Tacomas that work pretty well, but you're paying a lot and no DEF so good luck if you're in a state with emissions testing.

 

Yup! Nailed it. Def system and sensors everywhere on the exhaust system which throw codes all the time. Now if I could have deleted all that garbage I would have but in CA you get fined for burping so deleting the def system wasn’t an option. To bad to because the ZR2 was badass minus the diesel part.
