Got this welder together. Anybody want to take a guess as to what it’s purpose is?

Customer is going to use it to put on their forklift forks and bolt to an engine. Not sure why but hey, we are a custom shop and if you're paying, we're building. We have to send it out to be tested to 2,000 lbs now and give them the papers.

Damn, almost guess that it looked like a fork pocket. But from the beginning, it looked like you had 2 pins plug welded in the center of the span joining the 2 large sides of the assembly. So I didn’t think that was right because it would stop the fork from entering.

 

I’m assuming their forklift is large, the opening is 12”.

 

No safety chain loop in case the operator pulls the wrong forklift lever? Most fork attachments I’ve seen have a security chain or strap.

that might be one of those junkyard/all terrain Forklifts with forks that wide!

 

They don't have one on the drawing, I'm going to mention that to the boss.

I made one for my forks on my tractor with a boom pole to set trusses once and it has a chain on it, thanks for the heads up

 

Sometimes double chuck is the only way to hold the small bits.

 

You tend to think a lot differently after you’ve been visited by the OSHA fairies.

figured if it needs a certification it probably needs all of the bell and whistles!

 

I frequently throw a jacobs chuck in in my lathe chucks at work, the planetary chucks only grip something 12mm or larger.



By the way, all of the white build up is quartz vapor that forms when you heat quartz glass. I do clean it but it builds up again quickly.

How can your mechanical skills be rated as a 1-2 when you're a mechanic?!

 

I was wondering the same thing but didn't want to say it.

 

Just talked to the boss and mentioned what you said, he said that's a great idea. He's going to pick up a clevis and I'm going to make a tab and weld it on so they at least have the option to hook a chain on it. Thanks again for that catch

 

Next up, modifying this to fit the Tacoma....er something.

 

Excellent! I was even thinking about it further from an engineering simplicity standpoint and thought that even a simple hole in the gusset for a shackle might suffice.
