here on maui there are 1000+ rental cars parked in fields near the airport, been there since march. when i am in that area and see all those cars i wonder about rats eating the wires. it is a erie sight, all those cars that were once on the roads parked in fields getting dirty and overrun with rodents.

There are trailheads out here where the animals are notorious for chewing the lines. Sprinkling a perimeter of cayenne pepper around the vehicle keeps them away.

How do you keep them out of the engine bay? I don’t have a rodent problem but cats sleep on top of my engine. I guess it’s better than rats.

I've been leaving hoods open and lights on in the garage to keep mice away while working from home all these months. Check on them daily for any activity. Garage gets too hot, but the shop has a cat to keep that area clear of mice.

As far as those chemical rodent deterrents there's a mess of them you can makeup from household products mixed with water in a gal.sprayer if you do an online search. Some are pretty effective depending on the critter.

Yeah a buddy of mine down in AZ. made a 'home-brew' one and swears by them. He was getting mice chewing on his 4Runner and always has a couple of these in his garage. Hasn't had much (If any) probs since. I'm probably going to add this to The Arsenal ..
I actually have had, for 20 years now, one of those electric 'SQUEAK! SQUEAK!' noise makers. They work quite good actually... I had at one time an F-250 with a cab-over camper that got parked all winter. I'd get mice in the camper over winter, then I put the squeaker in and never had probs after that. The prob with that was .. While the noise drives mice nuts and drives them away ... the sound drove ME nuts too.. Inside a camper mutes it fairly well, but just having it in the shop, out in the open at full volume... Ehhh, I can't live with that.

I'll guess that's probably about the same thing I got, just a different brand. I'm guessing the 'formula' has to be pretty much the same for it to work... (Makes sense in my mind, anyway.. LOL!)
I only got the brand I bought cuz it got a good rating and the price was reasonable.. (Although not having yer wires all chewed up is priceless, actually.. ;))

I'm sure yer right ... there's always good 'home-brew' for most anything if you wanna dig deep enough... I was just absolutely shocked at seeing a nest under the hood of my brand new truck and thought 'I NEED SOMETHING NOW!!' LOL!
I admit .. I was a bit panic-stricken when it came to my new 'baby' ..

Ammonia based cleaners are generally ~1% NH4OH by weight. Consumer grade "pure" ammonia is 3%. Industrial grade is 21% or better. Stuff will knock you on your ass if you arent careful.

Edit: and also a "piss" poor product to have around your truck. Don't actually use unless you need control on very rarely accessed areas. Even then, probably still shouldnt use it. :bananadead:

You know what works great for moles .. especially as those little sh**s do most of their damage while yer still sleeping...
Our front/back yard was just getting destroyed by moles... I built a couple of 'Barn Owl' boxes (Think big bird house) from plans I found on the net.. so far, it's working great.
    The only downsides are:
You have to have some 'space' as the owls don't really wanna be near people. In other words, being in a residential 'regular' neighborhood with houses all crowed together .. Ain't gonna work...
They gotta be 10-15' up in the air.. (I put mine on the power poles coming up to the house)
You have to build it so you can open it up to clean it once a year ...
And, you may have to wait a year or two for the owls to 'find' it...
But once you get it going ... Our mole problem has all but disappeared.

I used to work on a wildlife preserve, our trucks were getting chewed by rats and rabbits. The ranger taught me to spray down the engine bay and sprinkle cayenne pepper all over it, sticks when dry, looks terrible, but works. Hose it off before servicing though, the tech guys will swear at you if you don’t.
Also, endless fun with one of these in the garage:7461BDB3-8012-4969-B0E1-8E408AC67C7B.jpg
Hang on a wall and put a bucket underneath it full of water just in case the shock doesn’t get them first.

The soda can trap works also, I spent the night at a cabin and heard splashing going on all night, in the morning there was about a dozen mice in it.D26F9CC8-62B8-47CA-80B5-E04F29B563FD.jpg
