Well... I did a dumb dumb. Drained transmission fluid instead of oil..

Its quite a stupid story. I definitely was not paying the attention that I should have been at multiple points. I am not a super mechanic (changed starters, alts, struts, stuff like that) I usually will do all the little servicing stuff, I've never messed with the engine or trans however.
Did an oil change about 3 months back (yes I know...). I was sold the wrong filter, and questioned its size (1st mistake) at the time I installed it, but didn't know enough about the things. The truck ran as it had been since purchase. Oil change was coming due and I had actually ordered a new filter and oil a week back.

3 days ago the filter blows off the engine as I accelerate into traffic (didn't know what had happened until I stopped). I coast it into my driveway as I was about 300 yards from my house. Dumped oil everywhere, oil pressure light, check engine light etc.

Monday I change the oil (or so I thought). Drained the trans instead, noticed it had a red tinge (probably 3rd mistake at this point), but was very dirty pushed ahead with it. 3 quarts came out so I assumed that I had lost about 2 quarts of oil when the filter came off.

Filled up the oil with the new and put new filter on. Truck started fine, drove it around my complex very slowly, (probably didn't leave first gear) was listening for knocks or any sounds from the engine, incase of bearing damage etc. Everything sounded fine and all the lights/errors where cleared. I thought I was safe and super lucky!

Yesterday I start my drive to work 5 miles from my house. Everything seems fine until about a mile in, I notice considerable lag between 1st and 2nd gear if I accelerate to quickly. Decide to take it slow, but I can feel something is wrong (should have just pulled over and had it towed). Get to work but it happens a few more times.

Leave work and check engine light comes on again. I have to pick up my kids and I don't have time yet to stop and check the codes. The lag or whatever is happening happens again several times on the way home.

Luckily my father in law is at my house and has a obd scanner in his truck. We hook it up and the code comes back P2714 ( Trans pressure control solenoid "D" not functioning or stuck off)
Im confused at this point. But keep googling, eventually stumbling on a picture of the transmission drain pan and the drain port plug... realizing what I had done, I google more and stumble on all the posts here.

Basically now, I am trying to get advice/opinions on what I should do? In an ideal world I would take it to a dealer, but A. I am flat broke, and B. I am broke as shit.

I looked up the solenoid and it seems like it costs anywhere from $50-$150 I haven't fully researched the part. I have never worked on a trans before either, so I am hesitant to do so.

My next thoughts would be to service the trans fluid as per the other guide on this forum, and see what happens with the codes. But I have a feeling that I should definitely have a look at the solenoid at the very least.

TLDR: Sold/bought wrong oil filter, didn't verify, it blew up, (not rated for pressure of truck). Then drained transmission fluid while trying to change oil because I am an idiot.

I've done this. it was the same size, shape, color and fit perfectly. however, it was the wrong filter number. They handed it to me from behind the counter and I just assumed it was the right one. The auto store I bought it at (O'Reillys) stepped up and paid for an engine detail ($300). Their computer should have caught the product number not being compatible with the vehicle I have saved with my telephone number. I will always stick with them because they did the right thing. The point is: always double check the filter number on the filter manufacturer's website!

 

Man, this happens a lot around here. The drain plugs are like 3 feet apart.

I'd change all the fluid correctly and then see where things stand.

EDIT: Also, start buying Toyota filters. They are $6.

i would fill the trans fluid back up. this entails a specific procedure and go from there. once the correct amount is in see how it runs and if codes go away

 

Thanks to @boogie3478 youtube, I didn’t make the mistake! Sorry this happened to you but interested in reading about how to fix the issue.

 

Don’t people pull the dipstick to check the level after they do an oil change?

 

I’m still amazed truck guys can’t tell the difference between the engine block and tranny.

 

I drained the transmission fluid on a standard trans. farm truck when I was sixteen - my first oil change. Heard about it for years. Never did it again. heh.

 

that first thread about this freaked me out. i put a gray sharpie note on the tranny plug..that says, "tranny oil" with a cartoon arrow pointing at it.

i have never done it, but i could see if i was being fast, being drunk or something..maybe arguing with the wife..you know, distracted.

The transmission isn't going to operate correctly underfilled. Buy 3 quarts of Toyota WS transmission fluid from the dealer (with a partial fill, avoid aftermarket brands like Valvoline Maxlife or Zerex Asian), pump it in. Drain/fill engine oil to the correct level. Disconnect the battery negative cable to clear codes.

 

That's how I was taught and how I still do it today. Drain oil then fill to within 1/2 qt of max. Run engine and check level. Fill remaining amount.

OP, don't beat yourself up. It happens. I would refill transmission fluid and see if everything performs as it should after that.

It's not THAT bad, a tranny pan and an oil pan look a lot more like each other than an engine block and a transmission

Yeah imagine changing oil under one of a few million Corollas out there. FWD with transverse engine means the tranny pan and engine oil pan are right next to each other. Both pans are black steel and the drain plugs are interchangeable...

 

Being a "truck guy" doesn't mean you know how to work on your own vehicles. We all had to start somewhere so good on OP for learning

whoa..i would take a pause on that one for sure!!

i changed the oil in my future mother in laws Infinity and that transverse engine made me hit the skids..i actually took the time to pull out the owner's manual. hahha..even the plugs were the same size!!

 

Always check oil before starting the change!

 

The wrong one sold to me was from an orielly's as well. I will check with them to see if they can help at all.

Yes, I pulled it and it showed the correct level. In my head, I had thought that I must have lost 2.5qts when the filter blew, then I drained the other 3qts when I opened the plug. So when I filled it back up with 5.5qt it was the correct level. When in reality, I lost ALL of the oil when the filter blew.

I'm not really a truck guy (yet?) unfortunately. This is my first Tacoma and I was in a rush/thinking of other things as I did it. But yeah its an expensive and very avoidable lesson to learn.
