FWIW mine lasted years with engine enamel. I did NO sanding I just cleaned and painted the stock steel chevy rims.

SO WHAT SHOULD I DO?!?!?!?! haha so heres a revised version of what i am planning on doing.. clean the whole rim with acid to clean it up, then sand it down, the just brush clean it again with water, put a layer of primer on, then sand and bruh clean again, another layer, brush clean and then apply a layer of black, then when that drives, another layer, then another, then wash again maybe, then put on two layers of clear coat. anything wrong with that plan? i think that should be ok and idk why not

I did all the sanding before any paint.

Then I just put all the layers of paint, primer, etc after that.

Duplicolor has been around forever-good stuff. Before you do the rims-prep the surface to make sure any protective coating is removed I.E. wax etc then take your time and go easy with those swept strokes-you know. The nice thing about engine enamel is it is easy to apply and tacks fast. I personally would go with a satin finish-that is what I used-too glossy on rims is gawdy.

what would too glossy be like though? ill do three layers of black, then ill do one of clear coat and see how that looks. thats my safest bet and not expensive at all i dont think

Do what ya want but IMO too glossy (shiny) aint the way to go on rims. Satin is right in between shiny and flat. Looks tougher.

Oh its black, except for the trd and lug nuts. That where it doesn't look that black is just the lighting in the picture. Heres another two where the lighting is about right. I know its kinda hard to imagine it on a black truck being mine is silver but I was just trying to give an idea of how mine turned out with just 2 coats of satin black.

Very nice job:) did ya do those yourself-and if so put your spray technique here. I wonder if they have a semi-flat laquer in between satin and flat? That may be the thing if choco doesn't want the satin sheen.

Thanks! I did it myself. I put it on here on page one I think. They don't have a semi-flat laquer in the wheel coating and its actually an enamel paint. If thats what he wants, I know a lot of people use rustoleum or krylon flat black. And if its not shinny enough you could put a light coat of clear on it. I used the duplicolor because its supposedly made for wheels. (Hoping it holds up better:D)

thanks for the help guys. if all doesnt work according to plan, will sanding down the stock rim with the 400 grit fuck it up? my dads worried that if for whatever reason it doesn't all work out well, that the stock rims will be ruined. so will the initial sanding ruin the stock rim?

If you aren't sure about the look, I would plasti dip them first. You don't ave to do any sanding, just a really good cleaning. If you don't like it you should be able to just peel the paint right off. If you like it, run em until it starts to come off on it's own, or peel it off and do a more permanent method. Anyone have pics of plasti dipped wheels for him??

Here is another thread about plaits dipped wheels :

I never sanded mine and the paint tacked really well-but keep in mind I had steel wheels and used high temp engine enamel. I suspect that "wheel paint" has similar properties. Don't sand. If anything-use a good compound paste and rub away any waxes or glazes to prvide a good tack surface.

There is actually instructions on the back of the duplicolor wheel paint can on what grit they recommend to use and what not. I think they say to use 320. You can also view a video on their website on the proper steps. They say you don't have to use primer with it but I did for self satisfaction. :D But I agree with the plasti dip to see if its what you really want or you can search on here and find some pics of black trucks with black rims. BTW the 400 I used looked like it took the clear off. Hard to tell with silver on aluminum.

The 400 grit is just to take the gloss clear coat off & give the paint something to adhere to. This really isn't complicated.
