Take this FWIW...when i fished Kayak Derbys there were a bunch of guys that jammed them into the bed of there truck and let 6+ feet of plastic boat hang off the end unsuported.

Some of those guys did it without issue...but some of those expierienced stress cracks at the last point of support. Hot summer day. Hot black truck bed. Hot plastic boat. They will deform given the right conditions. All brands can do this..Hobie, Wildy, Native, Feel Free...etc

I trust you will make the right decision @Bannerman but when i had my $3400 kayak plus accessories($$$) going 80mph down the interstate on a 95 degree day i was glad i had a bed extender on it.

My 14' PA wasnt going on the roof. Whether i could lift it or not. Thing was a tank. Lifting it is one thing, strapping it down and feeling confident your couple thousand dollar kayak isnt going to fly away while your going down the road is another. You can deform amd weaken plastic with a ratchet strap to. Keep that in mind.

Yeah putting it in the bed WITHOUT a bed extender was never an option. I was going to strap it to the roof, where it would supported the entire length, or in the bed with the extender. In any case, I've decided to just get the extender, it'll be handy for when I need to move lumber too so I'll get other use from it.

Some of the guys on the Fishing Kayak thread here on TW also warned me against using rachet straps, glad it's been mentioned as that would have been my first choice. I'll take the cinch straps instead.

If anyone is looking for a new job or considering switching careers, may I suggest the Home Appraisal business, we have had an absolute nightmare of a time getting appraisals scheduled on both the house we are buying and the one we are selling. :annoyed:

Not looking forward to buying and selling at the same time, with one place being 13hrs and a time zone away.

Got a verbal mortgage approval last week, now waiting for the official letter, hope to have my place here in Illinois on the market on Sunday.

I tried telling my other half we need to sell now and rent. That way we have cash on hand and can wait on the right house to come along since inventory is low. We would be in a better position to get under contract with no contingencies. But noooooooooooo

Well once I figure out where they are, I’ll have to put you on some fish. There are plenty of fishing tournaments down there all the time

Bannerman, I put SUPs and kayaks on my roof rack and then put a pad under my rooftop tent and have never had any problems. Farthest I’ve driven is 6 hours. And my rack isn’t as hardcore as yours. Nice. SUP is lighter but maybe catches more wind. Hmmm. Did you tie down the front?
