GMRS license you literally just pay to guberment, in this case the FCC, $70 and the next day or 2 you get a call sign. However, unlike HAM if one person in your group has a license everyone else can operate under that licence. It just so happens I have my GMRS.

As far as anyone actually caring...i'll put it this way. The FCC isn't driving around in black vans filled with CIA Special Forces Army Ranger Navy Seals equipped with antennas looking for people operating unlicensed equipment/ transmitting without a licence (despite what the HAM hardos will lead you to believe).

I agree, like I said....I have one....But the "right" answer is "no".

The FCC has way bigger fish to fry. Ham hardos do what's called fox hunting though. Most often, they'll do it as a "sport" where someone legally transmits a signal and they try to find where the radio is. BUT they also do it for illegal transmission. I assume the result is an email that goes straight to the FCC suggestion box.

Edit: Yeah and as Seth said, once one person has a license you're good. It's like going 66 in a 65, yeah technically it's illegal. But realistically, who gives a rip.

I'm not disagreeing. I need to stop commenting on what IMO was the intent of the legislation back in the day to govern rigs dudes were homebrewing that could do some actual disruption vs. the reality of most of our use to communicate via simplex between vehicles on pre-manufactured units.

Bummer. Thanks for letting us know. Stay safe, we'll do this again, I'm sure.

If anyone with a Baofeng wants it (assuming you have the programming cable), I can send you a .csv file that you can import to CHIRP and use to program all the FRS, GMRS, Wx, and MURS frequencies into your radio as presets. Not that the information is difficult to obtain, you can even use CHIRP to do it yourself.

Another bummer. Maybe some more skiing this winter?

Sloth covered that, it's a painless process, hardest part is forking over $70 to the man, just for a slip of paper and a fancy call sign (WRJJ572).
Technically (I just got mine, so it's fresh in my mind) the license covers yourself and your family, not necessarily other people you're communicating with.

I do not have a programming cable. Would I still be able to program my Baofeng to use Sunday?

But isn't everyone just 6 degrees of separation apart? So basically you're all extended family. #science

You'll just need to punch in the frequency manually. Not a big deal.

If people are interested and we have some time before pulling out in the morning, I could bring my laptop and cable to program your radios before we hit the trails, or afterward if you don't have to hit the road right away.

it's easy to just type in the freq's manually and save them. Especially since we're not using subnets or anything fancy.

I'm happy to get there a little early, or bring my own laptop. Thank you, I'm sorry to be an inconvenience! My girlfriend and I are staying at a cheap motel Saturday night. I am not a morning person and there is 0 chance I am waking up at 7am on a Sunday to drive there

These are pretty much the only gmrs frequencies I run. For receive only :spy:
. For the handhelds I'd actually program those to the same numbered memory slot so when folks go out you can simply Identify ch 15

That works too, if you bring your laptop I'll bring the cable, you'll just need a USB port. Download this app: https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home and save the file I've attached here so that we can dump it to your radio.
