Busted rear window latches.

When i purchased my truck it had busted rear window latches ( XTRA CAB ) and i didnt notice till after the fact.

Are these relatively inexpensive or is the dealer going to bend me over with no lube ?

Anyone have a magical discount OEM toyota parts website or hookup ?

 

Haven't priced the OEM's but they're plastic and prone to break from what I understand. These would seem to be a better alternative... check this out.

Yeah both mine were broken when I got mine too. I just never open them since I have AC.

 

Same thing happened to me lol. Noticed after I drove the truck around for awhile after I bought it before I noticed both latches were broken. I went to the stealership and got new ones. I think they were like $15 a piece maybe, I replaced quite some time ago now lol.

I typically dont sit in the back of my own truck either, but some people do.
I do live in Southern California by the beach, so id much rather have the windows down or open, then the AC on. Fresh beach air = awesome.

The billet ones look cool. Maybe ill give those a shot.

I bought replacement latches from Toyota and am ready to install them. But it looks like I have to take off the plastic interior panels. How do I do that??

 

Both rear Xtra cab latches were broken on my Tacoma when I bought it. Went to the stealership for replacements as non OEM latches are notorious for poor fit and not holding window tight, this means lots of wind and road noise. Each latch was approximately $30 but worth it if you ask me. Color match, perfect fit obviously, and hold windows tight.

Install is a pain in the ass, but pretty simple. You have to start with the plastic strip along the floorboard when each door is opened. Once this is removed, you can begin to pop the rear interior plastic panel in the Xtra cab seating area loose. The seat belts must be removed from the wall by popping open the plastic covers and then unbolting the seat belt mount from the wall of the cab. Once this is done, you can hold the plastic interior piece back and unbolt the old, and bolt up the new.

 

both were already broken on mine as well when i bought it, didnt know til months after buying it though. i cant really be bothered to replace them, i probly still wouldnt open the windows even if they werent broke. the back window slides thats good enough lol.

 

Whether or not you EVER open your Xtra cab windows, in my opinion, you should definitely replace the latches!!! First place anyone would ever break into a 1st gen Tacoma is that window. Trust me, my buddy's sub/amp has been stolen twice out of his truck, both times they broke in through the Xtra cab window. After the second time he smartened up and spent his money on an alarm instead of a new sub.amp. Don't get me wrong, a lot of the window latches will break with regular use, but a lot of times they are broken because someone went in through that window.

so your saying to replace my broken latches to prevent someone from smashing my glass and stealing my s***????

 

they won't smash the glass. just pry the window open, breaking the latch. broken latch=that much easier to get in.

 

I found several threads on this subject in the search function. May answer your questions...

 

I replaced mine and didnt pull the interior panels off. I used a little c clamp, torx bit and a small socket and pressed the pins out of the old one. Pressed the new one apart and pressed the new latch onto the old base.

 

I did mine without takeing the trim off, it was a pain in the ass and only replaced the side that was broke.

 

Thanks '02TRD. it worked fine although it took a while to figure out, and climbing in and out of the rear was a pain for someone my size. I unbolted both seat belts at their top mounting and the coat hook, and pried out the panel as you described. A lot faster for the second one. Now they work great. Other note, screw onto the window before bolting on.

Ramphonic, I thought a lot about doing too that but decided it was riskier than removing the panels, and am happy with the result.

 

no problem man, glad i could be a help. It's been about 6 months since i did mine so sorry for forgetting to mention the coat hooks and screwing the latch to the window before bolting to the body. I made the same mistake, but only took a few seconds to remedy. Just one of those things you have to figure out as you do it. Glad it all worked out and i'm sure you're happy knowing your windows are now latched closed, as i am too.
