Fishing out of a kayak?

which fish finder? The outback is ready for fish finder wires. I had to drill 1” holes in mine. I almost puked.

I think he said Garmin Striker 4, so maybe pretty basic but it’s a start.

Yep he said it comes with a paddle. So really just need to pick up a PFD and replace the lines on my rods.

Any recommendations for a PDF?

 

I buddy gave me the same fish finder. Installed it just this past weekend. Scary holes to drill.
That paddle pictured isn’t the factory paddle. Just saying.


I’m wearing the NRS Chinook for a PFD. Pretty common. Maybe too common.

 

Yeah I’m not sure what paddle I’ll end up with but it’s pretty much just back up right?

I’ve had others suggest the Chinook too so I’ll be checking that out for sure.

No. Outback comes factory drilled. It’s a great feature.

I’m running the Nocqua battery for my fish finder. It’s small and lighter.

 

Striker 4 is actually a pretty decent fish finder, at least for a kayak it is. Small, easy to install, and it has all the features would need on a kayak. My only gripe with it is the "gps" feature. While it is gps, there is no map that it shows on the gps screen, its just a white screen with you in the middle. But you can use it to tag spots you like to fish in, then it will guide you back to those spots... just no map showing the lake.

It also has a ice fishing setting so you can use it in the winter.

 

Good deal on the yak. Flip it upside down and put it on the roof rack. Strap it down correctly and it will not move.

Here's on thought on using bed extenders. Other drivers don't pay a wits worth of attention to what they are doing. I lost a good Old Town canoe to an idiot with no insurance that was on his phone.

 

I use the Chonook PFD for kayak. Plenty of pockets and has the high back for sitting comfortably in the seat.

 

I like the roof better than the extender. Like mentioned above other drivers don't always pay attention to bed extenders. Also when you get to the beach its easier to park the truck without the extender sticking out. If you park the truck with the extender sticking out and someone walks by and gets hurt you are liable for damages. Just saying. Plus on the roof rack i can go full speed on the freeway and then some without any issues. And I've easily driven over 200 miles in a day with yak on the car on the freeway and it doesn't budge. I currently have the Thule trac rac for the bed that I use to transport yaks. My previous cars/suv I've transported on the roof racks as well. I do have kayak/sup/surf board pads that I place across my cross bars to cushion the yak while resting on the bars.

this and a $7 waterproof box from wally world with a cable gland. Powers the FF, gopros, and in a pinch will charge my phone all day long, or at least as long as I care to have my butt in the seat. Cheaper than the Nocqua.

I have a big orange flappy flag, reflectors and insurance for the other drivers. I pull the extender and stow it in the cab when I get to the ramp. Anyone who runs into the rack with the kayak strapped to it should not be out in public without adult supervision. And its easier to slide the boat in the back then to lift it on the roof. Never had the boat move around at highway speeds in the bed. To each their own.

 

I'll agree that folks that run into brightly colored objects need supervision. But they are out there, and many will either run or don't have insurance. My Old Town was taken out by a kid with no license in a stolen car. Little SOB tried to run but another driver grabbed him.

In the end he was not charged or prosecuted for the accident (according to the prosecutors office "we don't add on crimes on first offenders") and I was out the cost of vehicle damage and the canoe.

 

i just ordered my T-Bone bed extender this morning. i carry my kayak in the back of my truck, and it is pretty secure, but i have to lift awkwardly to get it up and off my tailgate. the extender will allow me to step in between my truck and the extender so i can carry the load closer in front of my body. i have two hurt shoulders and any dumb move will leave me with weeks of aches.

for LONG trips, i will flip the kayak on the roof rack. i plan to fish the very first lake i ever fished for bass. it is near Tuscon. its what got me hooked.

if someone smashes my kayak. so be it. i am insured. i carry my much more expensive mountain bike back there as well in a hitch rack.
