Don't waste your money...really. Radar/Laser detectors do not protect against "instant on" systems, and most socal cops use those nowadays.

I volunteered for a police department back home, its always funny because you can tell who has radar detectors. You just flip the switch and you see people break real hard cuz their detector went off as you passed them.

Yeah I was think of getting a valentine or an escort...are they worth the money? I used to have a cobra a while back during my ricer days...it did save me from a ticket a couple of times especially on the freeway

I understand about the instant on, and if you are cruising the streets in the middle of the night by yourself its not going to help much for the laser band, but if there are other people on the streets and the lidar goes off for them you will know it. Also the 2 police bands KA and L are when there are actually police present. With KA it seems they leave it on all the time and you have a good 45-30 seconds before you can have visual contact. I have never seen a L on highway 101 down to santa barbra, and usually I see KA in San Jose but occasionally it is L.

Yes it saves me from tickets.

EDIT: The valentine one gives you arrows and identifies the signal, the others just beep and dont tell you what band it is from, so cop or grocery store are exactly the same. Oh and the valentine has a different sound for the 2 police signals.

    Against radar, Valentine One.

Against laser, mount several big ass off-road lights near your front plate with IR filters. :D

IMO speed limits are about as useless as gun control, but that's a whole 'nother debate altogether...

The Escort is not as good as the Valentine but it does the job. It does help, especially when you have vehicles in front of you or if an officer is shooting radar from the other direction. If they are using laser forget it. By the time the detector goes off they already have your speed.

    Yes.

    Yes, again.

It's not about avoiding a speeding ticket; it's about locating bogies.

This, its useless to have it and not use it, if you look on my build thread I bought the blend mount and wiring so every time my truck turns on it turns on and i never forget.

^ I hardwired mine too...and in town, even on advanced logic mode, I get too many false positives. I always use it on the interstate and highways though...my 2nd V1.

    V1, ftw!

I have an Escort and wouldn't use any other. it is great, saved my ass many times. With any radar detecter you still need to pay attention to what is around you. The last 10 years I have been all over the east coast following my kids athletics and up and down the turnpike to the mnts. and it has worked perfectly...:) I have the 8500 and am think of getting the 9500 next..

I have an escort which I love. The valentine is the absolute best with the k-40 in a close second. The cool thing about the k-40 is that there is a built in gps that you set a certain speed before it starts reading. That way if you set it for 20 mph and drive through a parking lot or somewhere with a bogus signal it will not go off until you are going over the set speed. And k-40 pays all your speeding tickets for a year, no questions asked.

I would like to discuss it I haven't seen any other threads, I don't want this to get out of hand though.

Heres my question, yes there is Lidar- less common where I live, but the Ka-band RADAR units, are those left on all the time because when I get a blip for those it remains constant until they are out of range unlike the Lidar which is instant on and you only see flashes of it if there are cars around you.

I use a $60 one from walmart. Its saved me so many times. No it doesn't help with instant on but it let's you know when a car in front or in rear of you is getting hit way before I get there. I just didn't see the need to spend $400 on a detector that a much cheaper one would do. Doent matter what kind you have.... if you don't have a radar blocker (which are not legal) you're f'ed anyway. I say grab one at best buy

I guess so lol, people don't take advice from real cops.
