Buckshot and slugs are both allowed. Prefer slugs over buckshot.

I have 4 buddies who all shoot savage 220’s and love them. Most shoot hornady slugs I believe. I just used my 870 12 gauge until this year when I’m switching to .350 legend.

What kind of range do you get out of buckshot? And how do you usually hunt with it? I'm tempted to try and use it more this year in the thick stuff down while covering the ground. I assume you use 00 buckshot. I got the best patterns out of a modified choke with remington 3" magnum out of the shells I could find close to me. 28" 870 but I feel like 40 yards is the farthest I would want to shoot with this setup. it would be nice to get better groups at 50.

The BEST shells by a country mile are 12 gauge OO buck Federal Premium Vital Shok with Flight Control wad. Nothing else that I’ve tried even comes close.

With a cylinder bore choke, which performs the best with this wad, I get 12” patterns at 30 yards and at 40 yards most of the pellets are in an 18” circle.

Our deer are Columbia Blacktail and I shotgun hunt just slow walking along power lines or through meadows.

You have to be within arrow range really so a tree stand or ground blind would work well too.

30 yards is the perfect distance and you’ll get authoritative kills. I wouldn’t shoot farther than 40 unless the deer was something special.

That said our laws stipulate 8 pellets minimum of size #1 buck or larger. If I could get flight control in #1 buck or a load that had a 1/2” ball and 7 #1 bucks packed around it I might use that.

I'll have to find some now and see what it can do. More than likely I would carry it when scouting in season because I routinely jump deer while hiking. I can use a 35 whelen down here during gun season so I will most likely use it anytime I'm sitting because I have distance if I want it and it will drop any deer on the spot with a high shoulder shot.

Savage 220 bolt action or H&R single shot with bull barrel...Both are extremely accurate!
