I will have to measure everything but I want the tire to rest against the tube. I may even have a plate with a slot cut into it, so It can act as a support, for various size tires.

Ah I see, so you could fold it down to open the tailgate. That's nifty. I still am not sure how to go about it without any welding involved. It'll definitely take some thought.

I'm not opposed to welding anything. I just wanted to know your thoughts on using 1/4" square tube before I begin, or should I re-buy something thinner?
Then I just wanted to know if you had a better idea for attaching the wheel to the support. I would definitely like to use real lug nuts, and if possible a locking lug nut.
If I have to I can use the cable lock I am using to keep it secured in the bed.

I am just already done with the tire in the bed thing, and I don't want to mount it under the truck. I haven't stood it up yet to see if I'd like that any better. I already had that flip up receiver collecting dust and the tube cost me $23 bucks. I expect a bracket to be a lot less.

It would be exactly like the setup above except it will be as close to the truck as possible without wobbling and hitting the truck. I can buy a cheap rear view camera and mount it to the cap, below the 3rd brake light and just tie it into the wiring going to the existing one with a plug. I would just disconnect the one in the tailgate. The tire would be high enough to see the tag so I wouldn't have to do anything to relocate it.

1/4" will be fine, just overkill. 1/8" wall would have been sufficient. The only downside is the extra weight of the 1/4" but it's not going to be detrimental. You have it, I say just use it. You'll get more of a workout when lifting the tire back up.

As far as attaching the tire, check this out. You can use actual wheel studs on it meaning you'll be able to use lugnuts.

Well damn Randejo, thank you very much! This is exactly what I need! $32 shipped. I guess this is a good price? And then studs would just be a press fit or would they need to be welded to this as well?

I have their rear bumper and the studs are tacked on. I'm guessing it's the same assembly.

It depends on what size they cut their holes to. If it is the same size as a Tacoma wheel hub, then you could just press-fit the studs in. You just slip the stud through the hole, stack some washers on it, then tighten a lug nut, pulling the stud through. It's very easy.

Alternatively, you could get some M12x1.50 bolts (same size as Toyota wheel studs) and just bolt those on.

I want to know more about this short bed, looks awesome! I don't see anything in the links on the first page, and there's no way I'll find it in 3800 pages. Any info?
