Interior Cage

Is there a way to add an interior cage without taking up room in the cab? Just something fairly simple. Maybe supports in the far back corners and two between the two doors. Then I'm guessing the front would have to go through a vent like the LT guys. So the roof could be a rectangle or square with and X in it. I have a doublecab. I would want it to not get in the way when you get in and out.

I have been thinking about the idea just for added protection in a roll over. Not just for off-roading but mainly for street use too. Just got word my cousin was in a bad accident. And for some reason I've been a bit paranoid about accidents lately.

Why not exo cage? It will protect the body too...

 

A strong EXO is dang near impossible on a double cab because you can't really do a B pillar without running it inside the cab. As far as an internal cage, it's possible but would probably get fairly annoying during every day use. No matter how tight you make it it's bound to get in the way somewhere.

 

Exo cage is kind of over the top. I would just like a bit more strength. Mjp2's is nice but over the top for my application.

 

I looked into caging my truck a lot after I came very close to rolling last year.

What I learned:

Partial cages can be just as dangerous as no cage; because if they fail they just become more metal objects to crush/impale you as the cab collapses.

No one makes a kit for our trucks, so you're going to have to go custom. Most places I talked to were talking $5,000+

Just because the truck will withstand the impact doesn't mean your soft head will survive the impact on the chrome moly cage. I refuse to wear a helmet in a daily driver, so the safety benefit on the street is negligible.

 

Valid points! Maybe the curtain airbags would protect the head??? But that's a lot of money. Maybe I will just wait til I go LT. Thanks Chase.

 

Get yourself an old beater-upper Toyota truck and build it into an extreme machine. A lot easier to 'swallow' cutting up an old truck than your new truck (to put a cage in). And a lot easier to beat the snot out of an old truck.

I had a Jeep with a cage in it. Jeeps are pretty easy to put cages in and there are kits everywhere. I still had it custom made and it cost $750 unpainted and 'not' tied directly to the frame (tub flexes). I did an end-over-end in that thing and it landed on the back part of the cage. It never sneezed ...except the tub it was mounted to buckled. I don't even wanna know what would've happened if that cage wasn't there.

Just be careful of what types of 'stuff' you do out there ....if you're treading that line of extreme offroading and dont' have a cage, anything can happen at anytime.

 

Mike from Defined Engineering (mpower on ttora) is building a cage in his 2nd gen access cab. you might get some ideas with that.


chase is 100% correct about a half ass cage is more dangerous then no cage. Cage designs depend on what you plan on doing with the truck. a Cage that would hold up extremely well for rock crawling most likely will fail in a high speed desert crash. (though it would still be better then nothing)

Cage prices depend on who is doing it and if you want keep the dash and the type of material you want to use. I'm right there with you on getting a cage. I actually don't drive faster then 50-60 mph off the pavement for the sole reason that I'm scared to crash any faster then that. a cage is the next big ticket item on my list.

 

Yea I wouldn't mind an older truck for a toy. But I think after I graduate I will be another vehicle and this will be my toy.

I've been wanting to cruise by Defined. Are they a shop or work out of home? I want their rear kit for my truck. Eventually I will probably do an MJP2 with mine but not for a year and a half. If I put a cage in now for daily driving I don't want to have to rebuild another. So maybe I will hold off.

 

He is doing stuff out of his house right now. I think. He was during the summer.


This is the only d-cab that I seen detailed pictures of a cage. This truck was built by Kyle Green Fab out here in AZ. He does good work.

No problem man. I always for get about that truck. since you don't have a bed cage you will have to make the C pillar hoop inside of the truck

I beg to differ. A properly designed cage shouldn't be able to tell the difference between a crash in a rock crawler and a crash in a desert racer. However you are more likely to do okay with a poorly designed cage in a rock crawler because you might just flop over on your side rather than roll 10 times at 80mph

 

There are two different things to think about .... and that's engineering & actual build.

A Fabricator will build you anything you want and to your exact specifications. That doesn't mean its engineered properly.

You could have the best designed and engineered product, but it won't do you any good if the yahoo behind the welder is half asleep.

 

Oh yea, and one of the main deciding factors was: "Wait a second, this truck is my DD, and I'm feeling like I need a cage...".

If you need a cage, you need a 2nd vehicle.
