Goodbye Axle Wrap Mod

Just stumbled across this thread. Haven't got to drive my truck much because my carrier bearing is shot, so I can't really tell if I have an issue with this.
But it sounds like if you upgrade your suspension it solves this issue?

I have a 2.5" lift with Skyjacker leafs and 5100's. Is this something I need to watch out for?

 

I did this today and no more thunk when I take off from a stop. It was cheap, $31 and only took 30 minutes to install.

Unfortunately this mod didn't work for my truck. 2009 regular cab 4x4. AAL with leafs from a 2019. Looks like caltracs or ladder bars or something.. Afraid i'm going to break an axle. Will a better leaf pack help this??

 

Thought I'd post another update. Today I installed the AutoCraft Over Leaf Helper Springs after poring over this thread again. I had originally installed U bolt clamps in front of my axle, but upon more careful reading, this is meant to help with the bump some get on braking ... at least that's what I came away with, whereas behind the axle helps with it on acceleration.

So I set out to Advance Auto to buy another U bolt clamp for the rear. I went in yesterday and noticed the AutoCraft brand of the Hellwig leaf helpers on sale from $59 to freakin' $5.99. That's right. So I bought one of those and another clamp set. Went in today to buy the other helper set they had but it was sold out.

Installed the helper springs on the back side of the Axle. Took her for a spin, went over some RR tracks and it was not too stiff as I feared. Pretty normal. Taking off I have, so far, experienced zero wrap, wheels feel much more stuck to the pavement.

Granted, it's early, need some time to let things settle in. Finger's crossed this "band aid" works long term until I can afford new springs. 304k and I think these are the original leaf springs.

Oh, and there's definitely a slight lift to the back, maybe 1-1.5 inches. Didn't measure before hand.

 

I posted a while about about adding the clamp and it does help, but it's just a band-aid "fix". When you add clamps, if restricts the movement of your leaf pack, which also make your ride rougher. The farther away from the axle you clamp, the more it prevents axle wrap, but the worse your ride gets.

In then end, this is how I ended up getting rid of axle wrap:

Thanks! Any reason why you went with those over the AC11030 (1,000lb capacity)? Was there a tutorial you followed?
I really need to do something on mine.

 

They only had the 035 in stock at my local store, so I went with that. I imagine it's stiffer than the 030, given the 500lb difference.

Edit: No tutorial, but I also didn't follow the directions that came with it. They have the U bolts upside down, so I had the U of the U bolts over the top, in the groove with the threads on the bottom of the leafs.

 

Gotcha. My store has the 1000lb capacity ones. Haven't looked into these before, but any issues using these with factory shocks or anything? And 1 kit is all you used?

 

They had 2, but I bought 1. Went back for the second one today, but it was already sold. Reason I wanted the second set, at that price, is in case I wanted to put it on the front side of the axle. And I edited my post above with how I installed.

Just found another local store with one in stock, so bought it online for store pickup, hopefully it will go thru.

 

This is how to completely eliminate axle wrap if you have leaf springs. Bud-Built sells them. It's a beautiful part for sure.

 

I did modify mine as the pieces are for extra cabs & 4 door 1st gens. I have a regular cab short bed.
Mine will be available soon as I'm 3 linking the rear so I will no longer need this awesome part.

I don't know if I've posted this before here, but I rebuilt my leaf packs and added extra leaves. Feels as if all perceived wrap is gone and it'll handle more load as well. I had a worn out Wheelers 5 pack and dug my old stockers out of the bushes. Split them and removed the overload then added in 2 leaves from the old.

 

Glad I saw this thread tonight. Ordered the $5.99 set from auto by my house.

 

That's what I was looking at as Dyna Chrome doesn't seem to exist anymore. I found these locally, I'm going to get them tomorrow.

 

Well I got the Sure spring part and I'm not sure it fits the 2nd gen. I think it's larger then the one that is shown by OP. So it might not be as effective. Does anyone have pics installed?

 

Reviving this old thread - but hello from a 3rd Gen owner who has been experiencing axle wrap for quite some time: I found this thread and decided to give the clamps a try. I bought the 2.5in kit from autozone and wanted to check in with y’all to see if the width is too close for comfort. On the driver side it’s pretty close to the gas tank and the passenger side it’s kinda-ish close to the Shock. My question is - from daily driving will there be enough flex to contact either the gas tank or the shock? Or is it safe? Or is this cause for concern - and I should shave off some of the plate or look into getting the 2in kit? Appreciate any help!

 

well; after a good while, and some good suspension travel on just the highway, I removed my axle wrap contraption. It marked my shocks and tank enough for me to think twice.
