2016 TRD sport 81,000 miles. Had picked a large stick penetrating rear tire. Took 2 plugs doubled over to repair. Held air and ran it a month or so. Started to hear noise and vibration from rear end of truck at 42 Mph. I figured the tire belts were separating on the repaired tire. Being tires were close to needing replacement. I changed all 4 and had a 4 wheel alignment. To my surprise I still had the vibration.
I have the extended warranty so I brought it to the dealer. Bad rear wheel bearing! Also discovered leaking power steering pump. Frame recall also requires undercoating......

Where are you located to need the frame undercoates? Is this a thing no matter where you live?

Bad rear wheel bearing at 81K?

That shouldn't be happening at that mileage.

Yes. My first Tacoma had 171000 miles no bearing issues.

Can you get a second opinion on it? Maybe have an independent shop look at it? Or mechanic friend?

Eh it happens, you can have one fail at 10k miles, you just never know. I had one fail on my 16 at 92k and when I pulled it out out it was smoked. I'm now at 156k and all is good except leaking timing cover, thought it was the power steering but nope! The dreaded timing leak. Plus the bad wheel bearing is easy to check on your own just jack up the tire and free spin and you will know if its bad or if their lying.

The rear wheel bearing is a wet bearing, oil keeps it cool and prevents wear. Any failure under 250k is premature ime and just doesn't happen unless the bearing was defective which is rare or lack of oil or oil breakdown. As a former fleet mechanic we would replace bearings and races if close inspection showed any indication of pitting no matter how small, that usually happens at well over 250k.

I ran my old 1985 Toyota for 286,000 miles with the same rear wheel bearings. Kept the differential oil changed regularly and front wheel bearings repacked ever 50K. I did replace the front wheel bearings at about 200k.

I really wonder if the OPs rear axle was low on oil to cause the failure. I would be checking the other rear wheel bearing as well.
