Hi! I am the new owner of a 95 Tacoma extended cab with 320,000 miles on it. It runs great except for a couple of annoying small electrical problems.

How long might this engine last? How long might this transmission last? Are there averages?. Should I consider replacing the engine before it becomes necessary?

Any and all advice is welcome. Thank you!

This guy does 10,000 mile oil changes and got 880,000 miles out of his 1st engine. Actually the engine internals were still good, but rather than replace the head gasket at almost 900,000 miles he bought one from a scrap yard with 100,000 on it. He has since added another 300,000 to that engine. Still using the same transmission.

Granted this is a little over a year old link. He either has another 120,000 miles on it since then or it died. I haven't seen an update since.

Thank you! That is encouraging. Changing the oil every 10,000 miles.... should I change the filter each time as well?

Always change the filter when you change the oil. Otherwise kinda defeats the point of an oil change.

yes, replace oil filter with every oil change
what engine do you have? 85 pickup, I'd say 4 cylinder 22r or 22re?

If there was a nuclear apocalypse, the toyota pickups are one of the few things that would still be running, especially those with the 22r/re. So don't be worried, these things are bulletproof, as long as they have been well maintained.

So, if your truck was well maintained, 320k miles is nothing
There's a guy on here that had 988k miles on his truck, with original engine and transmission (4 cyl 3RZ-FE)

There's no point in replacing the engine just because of concerns over high mileage. Only replace if it's blown or if it there is something wrong with it

what are your electrical problems? Not many techno goodies and gadgets in 85, so it shouldn't be too hard to troubleshoot

oh and welcome to tacoma world! :)

I would recommend the 5000 mile interval, also.

If it’s going to be your daily then change out the major stuff now before your money relies on you getting to work with it. If it’s not your sole means of reliable transportation just keep up on maintenance and it’ll tell you when it needs upkeep.

Welcome but this really depends on how much rust is in your area.

Mine will die of rust long before the engine or trans gives up.

And if rust doesn't kill it, the sun will bake it back to dust.

    Time is our biggest enemy.

It is mechanical let people use your truck to go 10 miles and the oil pan has a huge hole .

These trucks with proper care can go very long .

    You never know
