New forum guy here. Got a question about my 2019 Tacoma SR5 4x4. 30k miles on it, bought with 12k. Since I've owned it I've noticed a shake/buffet in the entire vehicle when braking. It happens at both high and low speed, regardless of pressure on the brake pedal. Had rear drums "re-surfaced" by dealership twice now. Was told by dealership last time I was in that it was an inherent property of 3rd gen Tacoma's to shake when braking because of its long drive shaft, and also that I need new tires and that was what is probably causing it. Anyone else experience this?

Excessive lateral run out of the front rotors, rear axle flanges, drums, rear leaf springs..... and may still be there but at a more tolerable level...... I had some pulsation while braking in my truck. Toyota insisted I double check my rear axle flanges which may have not been machines properly to seat the drums.... I machined my front rotors and replaced my rear drums and shoes.... all good ... grab a dart board and some beer and start shooting ;-) find a dealer that will help you with this.....being patient is key with a dealer who is trying to help

Not normal. Does the truck have a lift on it? Mine developed a shake after lifting it, around 25mph or so coasting or braking to a stop. I angled the rear axle so the diff and driveshaft were better aligned using shims. Solved.
But, if yours is only shaking when the brakes are applied, it may be the brakes.

2 service bulletins I believe That try to address this... one is for a vibration 30mph and under which is for rear leaf springs .... the other is for a vibration while braking.... been a while since iv read through these. I’m sure there are threads on these concerns.

That’s where gham comes in.... he’s gotta keep persistent with this concern.... last thing a dealer wants to see is the same vehicle keep coming back for the same concern. They need to step up and get to the bottom of this and gham gotta stay on top of it....... ask to see the manager or have a chat with him... “covid” changed ways of doing this though.... call and ask for the manager

If they give you the "it's normal" BS just tell them you are contacting corporate for a written explanation as to why it is "normal". Vehicles are engineered and tested to a very high degree. They aren't going to let one hit the market with a known vibration issue.

I have a second gen, and I'd never been impressed by the braking. 1st gen was better, especially with aftermarket Centric rotors and pads after the OEMs were worn out.

Recently I was towing a 2000 lb trailer in the Sierra Nevada and got a serious vibrate/wobble in the front when braking while descending Monitor Pass in third gear, for one. I also oddly smelled burned brakes once we got out at a stop somewhere. Never had that happen before under those exact towing circumstances with my first gen. Once home I took it into a trusted mechanic for a full brake inspection with a couple other service items, approaching 50k miles. I told them it felt like rotors.

This is a Toyota/Lexus specialist place just down the road from the dealership. The tech on mine is a wheeler.

They bring me out to the floor and show me that the rear drum brake adjuster was stuck, so the rears were not doing their job well, and there was a ton of black dust, piles. So that was making the fronts work harder, as were my heavier aftermarket tires and of course my full bed of gear and the 2000 trailer.

Front pads were within spec and had plenty left but they said the OEM front pads are shit, and they often replace them with Akebono pads, a little harder, that are OEM for Lexus. I said do it, and they used an on-wheel grinder to resurface the rotors while bolted to the hub.

I asked them about the rear pads. He, and the manager with me, both said stick with the OEM drum pads. They were well within spec, too.

Cleaned everything up, lubed the rear pad contact tabs and adjuster, new fluid. Done. Wobble gone. The brakes do have a more responsive feel overall, as one would expect after all that work, but the front in particular felt more responsive than when it was new with stock crap Dunlop tires and Toyota alloy wheels; my slightly upsized Coopers on F5s are far heavier.

So, even if you feel that front wobble, have the back checked too as a contributing factor.

    It's a secret
Could also be that your truck is nervous when decelerating to a stop...

Hahaha....ok ok...it's possible the front rotors are the culprit as a few others above have mentioned.

Any lift or leveling kit ? Mine did this when I didn’t have extended break lines or one of my lines were shot. One tire was braking the other was not or not nearly as much.

No lift on it yet, and the shake only occurs when brakes applied. Had rear drums smoothed out by dealership, still happens. Dealership mechanic told it was "the nature of this year of Tacoma because of a long drive shaft.

You got me at "lubed the rear pad contact tabs". I've had the drums smoothed out by dealer, however have not checked on front pads. Will definitely give that a shot!

They "checked" them at my 25k service visit and said all good. Don't really trust big name dealerships, might take it to the local Mom n Pop mechanic I've been going to for years. Just figured I have to take it to dealership to get the most out of the warranty. I think looking into front brakes is great advice and has not thoroughly been done yet. Thank you
