Hi guys, I am looking to upgrade from my 2016 Tacoma SR5 RWD to a TRD Pro. I have found a well priced 2017 in great shape from a private dealer, clean carfax, patience and never been off-road/adult owned. But it has 87,000 miles on it. Does everyone think it's worth spending 3,000 grand more to get one with half the miles on it around 44,000 from a dealer? any input would be greatly appreciated

Also how does everyone feel about buying from a private seller vs dealer? any suggestions? I am going to pay to have Toyota inspect it before buying

When it comes to resale, miles matter. Unless you plan on keeping for a long time, always get the lower miles.

I prefer dealers to private dealers, they have more venues to address with if issues arise. Also if financing its usually more credible institutions.

Is the pro certified pre-owned? Usually that means higher standards and 1 year warranty with some dealers.

Just buy a off-road ... Save yourself thousands and upgrade stuff your self . There is not much difference in a off road vs pro . Unless u want all that bells and whistles .88k miles ya screw that you don’t want someone else’s used crap who knows how they treated the truck .

Ive never been a fan of starting a relationship with a partner that has high miles, but I have friends that would see 80k as low. If you can get the history.

I’ve seen the prices lately and I might consider selling my 17 pro manual w 30k miles. Quick check on cars.com show Tacomas commanding top dollar. If the deal is good I would jump on it.

Get an offroad and swap the suspension yourself, at 80k miles the fox shocks will be needing a rebuild even without offroading.

Most of the clunkers & wheezers I have bought over the years had over 100K when I got them, some over 200K. They all did just fine, just need to pick the right clunker or wheezer.

The Tacoma was only 2 years old with 12K when i got it (CPO). What a luxury, buying something with a new inspection sticker --- and my first ever payment book.... :(

Appreciate all responses, the reason I am looking at pros is by the time I do rims, tires, leather seats, grill, and other modifications it's pretty close to the price of a used pro or the exact price. I plan on keeping the truck for a while so maybe I will put more money down on one with fewer miles to save me for the long run. It has a clean carfax, all the right maintenance done but its out of warranty, so that's why I was going to have Toyota inspect it before buying.

if you’re buying used try buying something with at least 6 months left in warranty.

Do the math. If you assume that a Tacoma is good for 300,000 miles (at most), 44,000 miles is 14.7 percent of the total miles until the junk yard.
So Tacoma A should be at least 15% cheaper than Tacoma B. You follow?
There may be other considerations, but for miles vs price, it's just math.

Depends on how those miles were driven...87k all highway is better than 40k all city driving. It’s the short trips of constant starting, stopping and start up that wear the fucking thing out.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I would drive your truck in to the ground then buy a new 2040 TRD Pro

But as mentioned already; I'd much rather have an even newer, lower mileage, nicer OR for the same price. Anyone can slap bro grill n rimz on for very little if patient and shop around.

Sadly I can't afford a new one, but they are pretty sweet with the new headlights. I was looking at offroads, but by the time I do leather seats, new rims, tires, a pro grill, and a few other changes I want, it comes very close to the price of a used pro or a little more by the time you get certain things installed. I am going to keep looking around but thanks for all the advice.
