I like running 93 here and it's cheap enough. I have a tune that takes advantage of the octane too.

Your truck will run a bit better... but only at WOT. Everything up to that is still ECU mapped and will perform the same. OV will help some as the maps are changed.

    this and that...
@Dwil108: thats pretty cool op. for the most part we have, or atleast had the same mods (this threads been a while.) i kinda do agree, before i went ovt i used to run only 87. sometimes i swear it felt like it would stutter upon acceleration. i attributed it to the brand of gas, cause i noticed if i run more mainstream brands i wouldnt feel it as much. after picking up sb, i would rarely feel it; i pretty much leave it at sport9. once i went ovt, i exclusively use 92 grade, most times settling for chevron or texaco. now? i never feel it. is it grade? brand? or ovt? i dunno. truck feels real good now in power and production and thats all that really matters.

How are you guys casually feeling this knock like this? I used to do some street tunes where I would monitor, log, and do a 4th gear pull on an empty freeway and I would see my monitor shooting up in knock retard and pulling a good amount of timing. I think at worse I had a split second of like 8 degrees pulled...still could not feel it in bucket seat I was sitting in, bolted to the floor

WTF??? Is that really your current gas prices? Gas is over $3 for the cheap stuff here in CA.

Also, what is 93 octane? (J/K, I know what it is but it doesn't exist here either)

When was this picture taken? I just filled up today at a shell off of 35 @ Rittiman and it was 20 cents more.

I've filled up with shell 87 all the time. last week i had to get 89 at the same shell station for my boat. I used the same 89 pump to fill my truck at the same time. Haven't noticed a smidgen of difference between the two, even getting the same fuel economy. Imo, its bs more mental than anything.

Yes, it reduces “spark knock” aka low engine rpm + under a lot of load.

I use 91 in my 2.7 for this exact reason. Don’t notice it at freeway speeds, but from a dead stop with shitty 3.91 stock gearing, its noticeable - I don’t have to slip my clutch as much or use more skinny pedal.

Other than that, I feel zero difference. IMO, still worth it to me as I hate that low rpm knock.

huge difference? Hell no, less annoying in my case

I would think this 3.5 engine if operating properly has sensors to compensate for any spark knock. I towed my 2k lb boat with 87 and now 89...not a bit of difference i could tell except my wallet being lighter.

Forget to mention we have all e-10 fuel grades here and they are very fresh unlike some crappy fuels i've gotten out in the upper mid west.

This was sixty days ago. I still pay less than $2.60 gal for 93. In California I was paying $4.25 gal for 91.

Nothing was ever mentioned about driving into head winds or not on the first day with 87 when mentioned it was windy that day. If it was windy on the 3rd day with a tail wind on 93 octane...it would take a brain surgeon to expect the truck to work easier at 70 mph.

It's not a knock, it's a stumble and it doesn't happen under any condition other than light or moderate acceleration from what I have observed . People that drive with a lead foot would probably never encounter it or notice any difference when switching octane.

I don't consider myself having a lead foot. I do drive a lot feathering the throttle unless its time to put the heel to the steel. I've never experienced any stumbling, or knock like cars of yesteryear.

Wow your prices are great there. I paid 2.229 at BJ's wholesale for the same grade of regular. At those prices I'd be able to buy 91 and still save compared to what we pay with my states high fuel tax. The club price is also lower than the street price of about $2.59 today.

I have a white TRD Sport. It does in fact run better on higher octane fuel, but when I run high octane it leaves a black soot on the truck right over the exhaust tip and it is very difficult to remove.

you need to run it for a few tanks before the timing fully adjusts
