Why downgrade? I’ve read here on TW the 2015 is the best of the lot.

FAKE news, don't believe everything you read in here. The majority of them abuse the heck out of the 3rd gen and they come here to complaint etc... I had 2 third gens and no regrets whatsoever, best truck I ever had!

Most likely with a few mods to the harness connector to the cab. If you had a friend who'd let you test fit the solenoid to the tailgate lock. I don't think that part has changed. And it's two wires tapped to the passenger's kick panel.

No problem.. as long as you stayed far enough from the exhaust system.

My 2020 SR5 DCSB 4x4 (sold it) had the harness running from the drivers side which was odd. I just installed it on my newly purchased OR and it had the harness running on the passenger side.

I found an OEM tali gate lock kit for $130.00 from BAM Wholesale parts. We'll see if they actually ship it as I've never done business with them before.

Is there a reason links to them are banned here? Is it just because they don't give affiliate links or something? Just want to be sure it isn't because they sell knockoffs or non-genuine or other "bad" stuff or something. I did order something from them that was supposed to be a Toyota OEM part (may actually have been the tailgate kit now that I think of it) and it looked legit anyway.

I asked that question to moderators and this was their answer verbatim.

"That link was censored because they have not been good stewards here. People have been known to be ripped off in the past so we can't support them being talked about here. Sorry folks!"

I personally haven't had issues but it sounds like it's a YMMV situation.

Strange, but OK. I guess if it is gotten bad enough that the moderators feel that way, then they must have gotten a lot of complaints and maybe it is good to avoid them. Seems to be many places to buy from where you can get similar prices anyway that are official Toyota dealers and such.

I've bought stuff from them three times in the past year. Got a good price and quick shipping. The stuff was always OEM. No problems here, but maybe they had issues in the past.

I got mine from BAM, legit part/good price/fast shipping. It arrived with the body harness for a tundra instead of a tacoma—I emailed and they sent out another (correct) kit and a return shipping label for the wrong part immediately. Would buy from them again.

Hey guys. I ordered my Tailgate Lock today and was wanting to review the Installation Instructions. Whenever I click on the file like in Post #444, all I get is a blank page. What am I doing wrong. Thanks.

I reviewed the instructions which are pretty clear overall. I have two questions. 1) Which area gets the metal wire ties? The photos are a little bit unclear. I was looking for a diagram with all of the wire tie locations, but if there is one, I've missed. 2) What kind of sealant is that? Is it a RTV sealant or something specific to Toyota?

The portion of the harness which is wrapped in a tinfoil-like thermal insulation (looks a little space-suit-ish) would be where you use the 4 or 5 metal zip ties. It's fairly obvious, there's a muffler nearby. You won't have much of any trouble figuring this out once you're underneath the truck.

    upload_2020-9-29_10-38-56.jpg

The sealant is to prevent corrosion I believe, it's a 3m product and you only need a very small dab of it. I bought the tube but I sort of wonder why I did. I think it might have been better to do one zip tie on the strut itself, cinched pretty tight then two zip ties securing the harness to that zip tie, one at the top, one at the bottom. That would have accomplished the same thing but without the metal clip and probably would have looked cleaner too, though this is all inside the skin so who really cares.

    upload_2020-9-29_10-40-16.jpg

Not sure how clear my description is but my thought was a larger zip tie from the red arrow point directly towards the bed/front of the truck then two zip ties securing the harness to that primary zip tie at the two sides of this metal piece. Looking at the photo more closely, though, you might need 2 of the longer zip ties, one for entry, one for exit, since the blue dashed line would follow the harness path. And I suspect you'd probably need longer zip ties than what was supplied, though purchasing long zip ties seems as easy or even easier than that 3M sealant and most likely fairly cheaper / more general purpose.

I haven't found any use for the 3M sealant since using it for this.

    upload_2020-9-29_10-31-51.jpg

Also, and this appears to be only me, I swapped the ends of the tailgate connector and by doing so was able to click in the male plug on the white connector next to the camera male plug and have the tailgate side for both female plugs. This looks and feels like the way the harness was designed. I believe the manufacturer put the plugs on the wrong ends by mistake, hence the instructions to just zip tie it in place. The downside to zip tie-ing the male connector from the tailgate it is that you have to cut the zip tie to remove the tailgate, a very minor inconvenience but one I was willing to take the time to not have to deal with.

For you guys that have installed it yourself, did you disconnect the battery? If you didn’t, did you have any issues with your power windows or sunroof like one poster suggests? Thanks.
