I’ve heard watching paint dry is also entertaining, in case you get bored with the brakes...

I actually did watch paint dry once. Not as bad as you'd think. Granted the paint was a tri trip and the drying part was the grill, but close enough.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it because they offer the MT transmission? You kinda need a good parking brake off-roading with a manual. The trucks that have rear disc brakes, like a 4Runner, still have a bogus little drum brake for the hand/parking brake. Not sure if it even clamps both wheels.

In the Tacoma, we get full rear braking force, via a hand lever (not a foot pedal or worse, an electric switch like a Ford) that allows us to manipulate the rear brakes while on the throttle starting on a hill etc.

I even use this feature in my Auto. I know of no rear-disc brake vehicle that gives us this capability, especially with a manual tranny.

Correct me if I am wrong. Certainly my F150 has a electronic button you press (don’t know what happens when you are driving) and my Camry has a foot pedal that actuates a tiny drum inside one of the disc brakes (think it’s just one side).

The Tacoma gives us fully variable, hand-operated braking, applying full force to both rear wheels, regardless of what you are doing with your feet.

Thank you Toyota for being smarter than the forums!!!!

I'll admit it. Rolling back into town on a Sunday night with my camper I often meet heavy traffic. Now when the camper drums get hot and the truck drums get even hotter, the fade is a real issue.

It's happened maybe three or four times over the past four years. Annoying? Sure. But why start a thread bitchin about it? That's not going to change anything. Only three things will change a discovered flaw: modify my behavior to minimize the flaw, modify the truck to eliminate the flaw (usually at the cost of a new flaw), or sell the truck in favor of a vehicle with an entirely different set of flaws.

It's A, B, or C. Sometimes posting on here to see if someone can think up a better option B. So where does the fucking whining fit in, besides comic entertainment?

I don’t see any issues, the idea was so amazing that the same suspension still in use today, just like drum brakes!!! If it works perfectly with no issues, why changing it?o_O
Matter fact, for all those who complain about drum brakes, there are kits that you can purchase to convert to disk. Problem solved.

It is for cost savings. For those that say it’s for off road look at my 2005 rubicon with factory rear disks. It will go places a taco can’t.

Cost savings on a 35k truck while the cheap Toyota cars have discs? Naw they do it because they know people will buy the trucks anyways & like I said they will have the dealer do the brakes. Almost anyone will take a crack at disc brakes but open up the drums and look at the springs and shit oh hell no.

Why would Toyota care if a dealer or home mechanic does the brakes? It's 100% for cost savings.

Our 18 Rogue has rear disks, but I'm going to convert them to drums. Maybe all four corners while I'm at it...
