The install is not that hard or expensive. Just sucks you have to do it, but its really not that big of a deal to add one.

It’s going to be a big deal, if there is a warranty issue relating to the third party cooler

That seems ridiculous... How can they call it a tow package?

Just install an oem cooler and you shouldn't have any warranty issues.

If any of you guys install a trans cooler , do me a favor and post some pictures up over at my transmission cooler thread :fingerscrossed:
I only have one 3rd gen member showing a cooler installation on a 2016
and a huge thank you for posting your 4454 install Markc1024

FYI - I read through this post and seen this come up a couple times .
There are transmission coolers for manual transmissions . I have used a few of these over the years but for mostly high horsepower applications . They function very well .
    Here is an example https://www.driftmotion.com/Driftmotion-Manual-Transmission-Oil-Cooler-Kit-p/dm3561.htm

Yeah, I did one on my Subaru Forester a few years back and did the same thing. I don't have my truck with me at the moment (getting some ceramic coating done), but I'm assuming the cool return line is easily identifiable?

There is an oil cooler, power steering cooler, brake cooler or something like that for the brakes (can't remember now), bigger alternator, 7/4 pin connector... There's a lot to the tow package

That would be correct as the truck still has a traditional ATF cooler, its the extra Auxiliary Cooler that's missing.

Yes, the truck still has a cooler, but earlier models had two.

Toyota made a running change to the specifications. It was rolled out in March across the board on 2020 models, earlier 2020's still have the cooler. Towing capacity and other specifications have not changed as a result of this mechanical change.

The 2021 NCF/manual books no longer include references to the auxiliary air cooler for the Tacoma.

How did you wire up the fan? Is it automatic in that it fires up at a certain temp? Looks like an awesome set up.

@gearcruncher I read your thread on expected transmission temperatures, it was very informative.

So what should we be expecting a Scangauge to report the transmission temperatures to be? I note that my SG reports for TF1 and TF2 the temperature with regular street driving and not towing anything is around 190 (ish) degrees F. I assume TF2 is the torque converter since at idle the temperature jumps to 220 degrees F or so.

TIA! Would the folks without a secondary cooler expect higher temperatures?

Thats a little too warm for my liking .
Yes, we gotta boil that condensation out of the fluid @ 212 farenheight and the demulsifiers are in new fluid to assist with removing that water .

TF1 measures the fluid in the pan
TF2 measures the fluid at the torque converter .

The hottest spot in a transmission is the torque converter , therefore transmission fluid in the torque conveter is sent directly to the cooling system to be cooled ( TF2 )
Transmission fluid from the cooling system then returns the fluid to the pan ( TF1)
Whats strange here .... when you idle your truck , the fluid in your converter should cool quickly becuase its no longer under any load . The fluid should not increase in temperature at idle . Even though you are no longer moving and there is little to no air flow through your radiator , the internal radiator transmission cooler should drop the temperature of the transmission to engine temperature .

Folks without a secondary aftercooler will see higher temps , however , this does depend on outside temp , towing etc etc

I have it wired to a relay/switch , under normal driving the fan really won’t need to be on . While in traffic, towing or off-roading it will always be on . I have a scan gauge with the pan and converter temp read out and will base it off that .

I’ll post more info when it’s finished , I didn’t like the straight -10an to 3/8 barb fitting and it will have a inline magnefine filter aswell .

I'm not sure exactly which fluid passages they are or aren't sitting in as I haven't really torn one apart, but in the AC60 both temperature sensors are mounted on the underside of the valve body.

Put trans in neutral or park and the temps may come down.
