That's a hill I'll die on. Absolutely love the push button start. Keys in pocket, unlocks and locks doors, starts vehicle. Yep. Love it.

That's Toyota doing it stupid. My Ram shuts off the engine but leaves all accessories on until you open the door. If you want them to stay on longer you just hit the start button without your foot on the brake and it goes into ACC mode just like the old single click of the key. The auto start also doesn't shut off when you open the door.

Are the people wanting to get rid of the tach the same people wanting to get rid of the dip stick and the spare?

I 'get' the Tach if it's a MT... And a HP rig. I'm old-school enough as I had a 69' Roadrunner - 440 six-pack - MT ... 70' Chevelle SS - 454 - MT ... etc. Yeah you need a tach. I'd even go so far as to say back in the 70's when you had 2-stroke street bikes (I had a Kawi H2) you had a very narrow power band, so a tach was very important ....
    But modern stuff?
For instance... My new RS with a 2.7 / AT
    My wife's Forester .. 2.5 AT ...
Mother in laws Xtera .... 4 cyl / AT
My 94' Bronco (Plow truck) 351/AT (Although has full gauges, but still has a Tach)
96' Caravan beater with a heater ... 3.3 AT .. full gauges, but still with a Tach
    (Used to have)
96' Geo Metro ... 1.3L MT ... Tach (Really? LOL!)
    91' Mazda B2200 2.2L ... AT ... full gauges but still a Tach ...
I could list more, but you get my point... None of these really needed to have a tach....
I would say that a full set of gauges, is way more valuable than a tach.
I would even say that (Those of you who are old-school enough) a vacuum gauge gives you invaluable info. Way back when that used to be an option ... when saber-tooth tigers still roamed the earth .. ;) )
(OK, Call me a dinosaur, but that's OK .. LOL! )

Rolls Royce uses this instead of a tach. makes sense, but undoubtedly embarrassing in a Tacoma.

I welcome as many gauges as possible on vehicles these days. I’ve worked on newer Honda’s And some don’t come with tachometers or a coolant temp gauge. I have to do cooling system work and I can’t tell if the Honda is going to overheat until I get the red warning and it’s too late.

I've driven a few manuals that didn't even have tachs, one did have shift lights though.

I very much dislike any vehicle without a tach, even in for autos. I'd rather they use a digital speedometer and add a full set of small analogs for oil pressure, oil temperature, and trans temperature if it's an auto.

Nothing is more intuitive than just turning a key to accessory

In simple terms this post was about wanting a Yaris cluster just and speedo with even an idiot light for a temp gauge

I like the push button start in my new truck. If I want the accessories I push the button once. If I want to turn the rest of the stuff on I push it twice. To start I step on the brake (always have started a vehicle this way) and push the button. To turn off from any position push the button. Took about 1.5 seconds to learn.

I have a manual transmission and I still find the tach slightly more useful then the inclinometer, but I’m a nerd so I like to watch the numbers sometimes.

Don't hate the push start but my SR has a key and I like it better for trucks.

This is not really true. I never shift based on the tachometer. I shift based on experience gained by driving the truck. I suspect the same is true of most drivers. There is no magic RPM to shift at. You shift based on situation, mood, and experience with engine behavior.

A tach is a very useful instrument

    Measures rpm

    Shows shift points

Useful for checking torque converter slip

Test the flash stall rpm of a converter

    Plus it looks cool

If you have time to look at your tach (or your inclinometer) you aren’t wheeling hard enough.
