Hi, I'm a first time Tacoma owner who got a good deal on a 2018 TRD sport (RWD). I already have a 3" lift with new tires. Next I'd like to get a rear locker but don't know what's compatible with it. I'd like some suggestions please.

Whatever you want will be available. The only real limitation is if you have a manual transmission as that rear axle was introduced in the US with the 2016 models and has slightly less aftermarket support.

Yeah but idk where to start. I have an automatic, idk anything about gearing or anything. I just want something that'll be compatible with what I have and can have someone install easily.

no offense but if you wanted to buy an off-road truck, four-wheel drive probably should have been the first thing you looked at.

As it is, any locker can be built and put in to that rear axle. Same with an air locker, but then you've got to have air hoses and a dedicated compressor as well. Any differential shop should not have a problem installing a locker for you.

Im not looking to do anything too serious, just thought it would be better to have than to not. also the cost difference between what i paid for mine and a similar 4x4 sport or offroad(or even sr5) is over 6500.

Sounds like you’re from Cali, the cost difference was the biggest factor why I got a 4x2. I have the OR with locker, then again, I doubt ill ever use even the locker with my uses. Where did you plan in going?

Im from central Texas, Fort hood area. I mostly go out to the training areas there when theyre not in use.

I got a good deal during the peak of the pandemic. 27000 with 32k miles

Selectable lockers are cable, air, or electrically actuated and allow you to drive around normally with an open diff but will lock the diff into a spool when you want. They will be the most expensive with the most intensive install.

Auto lockers are not selectable and are always mechanically functioning. They allow differentiation but have unique road manners when compared to an open diff or lsd. You'll know it's there every day because of the handling and noise. You'll adjust your driving style and need to be careful on slick road surfaces. They are as effective off-road as a selectable locker when it comes to traction.

A full auto locker like a Detroit is as intensive to install as a selectable locker minus the installation of the actuation system (cable, air, electrical work). They are about half the price of a selectable and replace your stock carrier.

A lunchbox locker is an auto locker but just replaces the spider and side gears in your stock carrier. It is the cheapest and easiest to install option but not as bullet proof as full carrier auto-lockers.

    There ya go.

Gotcha, only guessed Cali because it was roughly $6k to add 4x4.

Getting a locker installed is going to be another 2k, easy. And a 4x4 without a locker will still be significantly more capable.

I want an ARB locker but am not sure what one I need for my truck. Sorry for my lack of knowledge, still new to this.

Find a reputable shop and have them sort out which model # is needed. Might as well get regeared at the same time.

Only 4k under my brand new Sport M/T 4x4

Still, for 2020 that's a smoking good deal, esp on a higher trim.

If you do get a locker (harrop e locker would be a solid choice) you should check out the dunes in Utah or the little dunes in Oklahoma. 2wd locked is a BLAST in sand

Probably should've led with that. I'm not looking up the part # for you.

If it were my truck and my money I'd put it back stock and trade in for a 4x4 and put the mods ba k on that.
