RSI Smart Cap

I wasn’t able to upload from my computer the other day, so I’m finally getting around to it on my phone.
Here is some photos of the wiring used a magnet to hold it in place. Tapped into the tail light. Blue wire is hot. Grounded to an empty screw behind the tail light.

If you want a magnet that's made for wire ties, let me know. They're smaller and crazy strong. I just have to look for them in my Amazon history.

Wow your rubber is looking pretty rough already. Mine doesn’t look 1/10th as bad. Might want to bring that up to rsi. I do dig the net idea! Might to something for me to look at on a rainy day.

 

2 questions- so where do you unplug if you want to take the cap off, do you have to still take the taillight off? And where'd you get the net?- looks great. I'm definitely ordering those magnets @crashdb recommended...

 

This cap is nice. I was about to pull the trigger but I think I’ll wait till they come out with a new lock that can be opened from the inside.

Unless you can close the back door without it latching so it can be pushed open from the inside? Or is the only option to leave the door fully up and open if I wanted to sleep in back there?

I can close mine without latching it and you would be able to push it back open. The side doors as soon as I unlatch them the gas struts push it open.

I think the concern is that if you were in the cap with the door closed, someone could come push the latches down and since they can’t be released from the interior you’d be locked in. It looks like the back hatch will stay down on its own, so if you’re not concerned about that it’s not a problem.

 

If for some strange reason you did find yourself locked in your own Smartcap, if you have a long enough wingspan you could always open the side window and unlock the gull wing doors. Wasn’t sure about this until I tried it myself- I’m 5’10” and had no problem reaching- But keep in mind I’m in a short bed. I also wasn’t sure how this scenario might arise, until my 12 year old who I asked to take the photo- did indeed close the rear latches and demanded I get myself out to prove it was possible. F’n kids.

@acupunk my pickup is a long bed. I’m 4” taller than you, but I’m not sure that’ll make up the difference!

 

First post on the forum... just got a 2020 DCLB TRD Offroad with the intent of putting a cap on it. 95% chance I'm gonna get the RSI, and soon too. But I'm curious what the internal usable height is from the bed. My objective is to be able to put mountain bikes with the front wheel off in the back of the truck and park in the city, keeping them protected, vs leaving them on the hitch rack.

Anyone got any measurements?

 

I’ve got a OEM Toyota bed mat and from that to the first internal support bar is 37.5”. There’s another full inch until the actual roof, but the support beams go horizontally not lengthwise.
Had the bikes in the truck today for the first time since fitting the cap- gotta say the fork over tailgate method is not that easy to use any more, and leaves the rear door open while driving - looks like I’ll need a hitch rack.
Let me know if you figure a good method for mounting in the bed. I’ve looked into this before but been thwarted by the need for 15x110mm fork mount.

 

Seems like the Kuat Dirtbag Truck Bed mount might work, and I have seen guys simply mount them to a couple 2x6's laid crosswise that can be thrown in the front of the bed and removed at any time, but they didn't have caps on their beds so not sure how it all works out. But, maybe there's a thread on this on Tacomaworld now that I think about it....

The fact that the back of RSI doesn't match up with the tailgate is a deal breaker for me. It looks terrible being shorter/ smaller than the tailgate. For the best water prevention, it should match up and have a small deflector lip like the alu cab and RLD.

 

I knew it would leak there.
