No it wasn't, it was good.....to the point, factual and an excellent public service announcement. Many don't respond to the nice considerate approach. If they did there wouldn't be the amount of posts like that to begin with.

I Just Drained & Filled My 05 Tacoma 4x4 With 128,000 Miles, Nothing Wrong, Just Did It As Routine Maintenance.

What You Will Need ⏩ A Cheapo Clear Lemonade Pitcher " With Quarts Marked On The Side " From DG For $4, Bought A Cheapo Infared Gun From Amazon For $16, Bought 2 Gallons ( 8qts ) Of Valvoline MAX Life WS Rated Transmission Fluid At Advanced For $60,And A Chepo Hand Pump For Gallons And Quarts For $10, " I Had To Extend The Pump Body To Reach The Bottom Of A Gallon Jug, And I Used A Piece Of 1/4 Steel, Copper ETC Tubing That I Bent A Hook On 1 End For Staying In The Fill Hole ", Both I Had Laying Around The Garage, No Big Deal. Total Cost Of Drain And Fill 2 Times = $90

Note - Have A Clean, Empty Gallon Jug On Hand To Pour The New Fluid In, The Pump Does Not Fit The HUGE Threads On The MAX Life Jugs, Plus You Need To Measure The Fluid Out Into The Lemonade Pitcher 1st, Then Pour Into A Normal Clean, Empty Gallon Jug, " Preferably A Clear 1 " So You Can See It.

DIY Drain And Fill Procedure ⏬⏬

    1) Make Sure Transmission Is Cool, Vehicle Turned Off And Is On Level Ground.

    2) Locate & Remove the Fill Plug It's A 24mm Or SAE 15/16 Shallow Socket, It's On The Passenger Side, Behind The Transmission Pan Above The Cross Member Area, Towards The Top Of The Transmission Case, It Will Have WS Marked On It, To Verify You Have The Right Plug, " Don't Loose The Rubber O Ring ", Set The Plug Aside.

    3) Find The Transmission Drain Plug, It Takes A 14mm Or SAE 9/16 Socket, It's Towards The Driver Side On The Bottom Of The Transmission Pan, Then Locate The 5mm Or SAE 3/16 Hex Head Plug Towards The Passenger Side Of The Transmission Pan, Now Take The $4 Lemonade Pitcher, Loosen The 14mm Drain Plug, And Drain The Transmission Into It, It Should Measure Out About 2 1/2 Quarts " Don't Loose The Copper Gasket On The Drain Plug ", Wait Until It Comes To A Drip, Then Put The Drain Plug Back In " Just Snug ", Then Go Ahead And Loosen The 5mm Hex Plug,Move Your Lemonade Pitcher Over To It & Remove It " Don't Loose The Copper Gasket " There Should Not Be Anymore Than A Drip Or 2 On This Plug, This Is For Your Final Fill, And Actually Let's Fluid Out. But Go Ahead And Put That Plug Back In Now As Well Along With The Fill Plug " Just Snug " At This Point, You Should Have About 2 1/2 Quarts In Your Lemonade Pitcher " Remember The Amount "

    4) Pour The Old Fluid You Now Have In The The Lemonade Pitcher Into Another Container For Later Disposal, Wipe Out Your Lemonade Pitcher With A Clean Rag Or Paper Towels, Pour The Exact Amount That You Drained Out, Into The Lemonade Pitcher, With The Fresh Valvoline MAX Life Transmission, Now Pour This Into Your Empty, Clean Gallon Jug, Which Should Be About 2 1/2 Quarts " Referring To What You Drained Out ". Now Put Your Modified Cheapo Hand Pump On The Gallon Jug, As I Mentioned Above, I Had To Lengthen The Pump To Reach The Bottom Of My Gallon Jug, And I Put A Hook On The Outlet Hose On The Pump With A Piece Of 1/4 Steel Brake Line Tubbing, Copper ETC, To Keep It From Coming Out Of The Fill Hole, Now You're Ready To Put Your 1st Round Of Fresh Fluid Back In.

    5) Remove The Mentioned 24mm Or 15/16 Fill Plug " Don't Loose The Rubber O Ring ", Insert The Bent Hook You Made On The Outlet Hose Of The Pump, Into The Fill Hole On Your Transmission, In A Position It's Secure And Won't Blow Back Out Of The Fill Hole, Begin Pumping In Your Fresh Fluid Until It's Gone. Now Put Your Fill Plug Back In, " Just Snug ". Now With Your 1st Round Of Fresh Fluid In, Start The Truck, Go To Reverse, Then To Drive, Back & Forth Abouth 10 Times, Now Put It Back In Park And Shut The Truck Off.

    6) With 2 Gallons Of Fresh Fluid, You Will Be Able To Drain And Fill It 1 More Time, Now Repeat Steps 1 - 5

    7) With 2 Gallons Of Fresh Fluid, And 2 Rounds Of Drain And Fill, You Should Have 3 Quarts Left For The Final Fill, So Now Repeat Steps 1 - 5, Except Put All 3 Quarts Of Remaing Fluid In For Your Final Fill, After Going From Reverse To Drive, Back And Forth About 10 Times, Let The Truck Run About 10 Minutes, " Pending Outside Air Temperature " If It's Cold Then Run It About 20 Minutes, Then Take Your $16 Infared Gun And Put It About 3 Inches From The Center Of The Bottom Of The Transmission Pan And Pull The Trigger, You Should Be Between 99° - 115°, Once You Have Reached That Temperature, Re Locate The 5mm HEX PLUG, Put A Pan Under It, Remove The Plug " With The Truck Running ", And Let It Drain Until It Starts To Just Dribble, " You Should Only Get About 1/2 A Quart, Now You Are At The Correct Fluid Level, Re Install The 5mm HEX PLUG, Now Make Sure All 3 Plugs Are Tight And Clean Everything Off With Some Brake Cleaner ETC, And Dispose Of The Fluid That Come Out, You Have Now Completed The Drain And Fill For $90, If You Already Have A Hand Pump, Infared Gun & Measuring Container,Then It'll Only Cost You About $60

** Note For Colder Weather Run For About 20 Minutes To Achieve The Proper Transmission Fluid Temperature

Hope This Helps Someone Out On A Low Budget, I Listed The SAE Sizes That Will Work Instead Of Metric, Incase You Don't Have Metric Tools. No Need For A Scan Tool Either,Unless You've Actually Overheated Yours And Your Trans Temp Light Came On, Then It Will Probably have A Code That Will Need Cleared Out, But For General Maintenance, This Will Do It

I'm at 87k just did my 90k maintenance early, almost feel like I should run the truck too the dealer and get the transmission flushed. How is a drain and fill different than what the dealer would do for a flush?

They May Possibly TRY To Drain It Completely And Refill It, They Actually Hold About 11-12 Quarts, Counting What The Converter Holds, I Would Ask Them Exactly What They Are Going To Do, They May Have Different Options Per Request And Pricing.

They Have A Special Machine That Will Hook Up To The Trans Lines To Flush, Drain & Refill It, But With That Low Of Miles I Think You Would Be Ok With Just Dumping it A Couple Times. Running It From Reverse To Drive A Few Times Cycles It Out Of The Converter, It's Tough To Get It All Out, Even With A Machine.

I'm Gonna Drop The Pan And Clean My Filter And Give It A Couple More Rounds In About Another 10,000 Miles

Infrared gun will be off by 10-15 degrees, just jump out the obd terminal, as outlined by many post and use your computer to tell you an accurate trans temp, it's easy, that's how I did mine, probably not that important but that's how the engineers designed this trans.

I’ve done the drain/fill many miles ago, and I just did the flush with the pesticide sprayer method.

The flush was actually easier and quicker (if you have the tow package trans cooler) You do spend more money obviously.

For anyone interested in the drain fill, I would recommend just doing a flush.

i personally didn’t notice a difference in shifting smoothness or anything like that.

Yes It Will Be Off A Few Degrees Vs The Actual Internal Transmission Fluid Temperature But It Will Be Close Enough, I Watched A Video With The Computer Hooked Up Vs An Infared Gun, And It Was Only Off 5°. Actually Just Cycling It From Reverse To Drive Then Putting It In Park And Just Letting It Run For 10-15 Minutes, Should Be Fine, Pending Your Outside Air Temperature, If It's Cold Run It 20 Minutes. Cycling The Gears And Running In Park For 12 Minutes Had It At 99° On A Computer, Infared Gun Showed 95°, Recommended Operating Temperature On Final Fill Is Between 99°-115°

I Posted This For The DIYers ,The Low Budget Guys, And The Not So Savy Folks, To Be Able To Just Use the Simple, Basic Tools. I Saw The Article On The Jumper Wire, I Wouldn't Recommend That To Someone That Doesn't Know EXACTLY What They're Doing, Because They Could Burn Up Their Computer Jumping Across The Wrong Terminals.

I Just Edited My Original Post And Changed A Couple Of Things, Technically It's Not " Flush ", It's A Drain And Fill, And Runtime For The Final Fill May Vary, Pending The Outside Air Temperature, If It's Cold Run It About 20 Minutes, But Anyhow, Hopefully These Articles Helps Someone Out
