Agreed. My Charger keyless ignition and remote start worked like this too, it's Toyota decision making that makes it more frustrating then need be.

Keyless ignition > taking keys out of pocket

Tach is helpful in S mode while engine braking down a steep decline.

Twist a key to close a contact engine starts. Sit in the vehicle, press a button to close a contact, engine starts. Tech has advanced so much in a 100 years.

    Lol... you're right!

Turn on 1955 model Zenith TV and watch TV on poorly tuned CRT in black and white.

Turn on 2020 model OLED 8K TV and watch TV on hi-res digital panel.

Same operation, but SO much better experience. ;)

You'll love keyless entry and push button start right up until you drop your wife off for an appointment in her car which has the feature. Then you drive several miles down the road to another location and shut the car off. And only then do you remember that she keeps her fob in her purse. Fortunately it was a nice sunny day for a walk.
That's why I love that my manual Tacoma has the old fashioned key.

Oh I don't miss those days at all. With each pull of the steering wheel that keychain would gently tickle my knee just like creepy Uncle Andy. Plus its nice to hop in the truck and go without having to do that weird half-stand shuffle in the driver's seat trying to dig a key out of your skinny jeans. I like it so much that I briefly considered trading it for a Gladiator, just so I could have a MT with PTS.

Wait, what car was this and why wasn't the dashboard lighting up like a christmas tree as soon as the key left the vehicle? Most cars Ive driven will fill up the 4 inch info screen in all capslock letters when "key not detected".

I use mine to rev match my downshifts (MT)

Very possible to do without on 4 wheelers but I got in the habit driving semi

I probably look at the tach more than the speed...

Well the Tacoma instantly beeps like crazy and warns you on the dash if the key leaves the car at any time. So not sure how you could accomplish this...

I guess I'm Old School. Everything I own with a license plate on it has a Tach (except for one of my Motorcycles). I don't use them a lot but I'm glad to have them there, even if most of the time they are just filling space on the dash. I've driven cars and trucks in the past which didn't have a Tach and found them a bit more boring to drive. I was happy to see that Toyota still uses a key on the MT's. Not having one would not have been a deal-breaker for me but I don't have a problem remembering to pull the keys out of my pocket as I'm walking up to whatever I'm driving or riding.

It's funny though, yesterday I was teaching my GF's kid how to drive a Manual Trans in an empty parking lot in one of my old VW's and I specifically told him not to look at the Tach (on that car it's an aftermarket unit I mounted under the dash years ago) as looking down at the Tach (even in a 'normal' car) can be really distracting to a new driver. The kid rides ATV's so he gets how to shift via ear

right on. that's how to teach it and i appreciate that. the tach gives info which is always good, but one of the greatest things of driving the MTs is getting into the full sensory experience, being in control, and keeping your eyes on the road.

my oldest is 8 now and i cannot wait to share it.

I'm with ya. Why TF I would have to take my shit out of my pockets this day and age is beyond me. Like, why isn't this tech standard on getting into my house as well??

I just got a work truck that still uses a key. Drives me nuts because I'm constantly grabbing the door handle to unlock the vehicle with no result. Makes me feel like a dolt.

Because the engineers haven't got everything dialed in perfectly. ;) I use the tach for reference because I like to shift my AT manually to keep the revs up in the power band and get better performance, trading a 1-2 mpg loss in the process. You don't need a tach the same way you don't need power windows or air conditioning. It's a feature expected at this price point. The Tundra pre-facelift actually had a tach delete on the base model:

I wouldn't care if Toyota deleted the coolant temp gauge and replaced it with 2 idiot lights like Subaru did: blue light when the coolant is cold, red light when the coolant is overheating, and no lights in the normal temp range.

I find myself walking to my driver's door to unlock the truck instead of reaching into my pocket to push the button on the fob. 110% love the keyless start! Only wish my accessories stayed on until I opened my door. I sit at work listening to my radio before I have to go in.

Whats funny about that is that I hate it when I turn my work truck off and my accessories stay on. lol, I would appreciate the ability to toggle that feature.

I would have loved the MT. It's been a while since I had one, and it looks like they will be gone soon... from any model. But for a lot of us, we have to factor in other aspects of life in this decision. I have a wife who can't drive MT, and if she needed to use my truck in an emergency to get to our daughter or something like that... not good. Some of us are just tied to the AT whether that's our choice or not.

Get a few shifts in for me next time you drive, will ya?
