Co-Worker had Home Invasion

So I'll skip some of the details, but here's the story. I had two of my employees work a late install at a Hotel Monday night. They finish at 2:00 a.m. The next morning one of them calls to say he's on his way in around 10:00 a.m. and this is what happens:

- Falls asleep on bed again
- Wakes up to someone ringing the doorbell like a mad man
- Check peephole and it's a chump wearing a backpack looking like he's trying to sell something
- Not wanting to buy anything, he heads back to bed
- Chump keeps ringing doorbell, so he goes and checks the peephole again to see the chump shrug his shoulders, take a deep breath and start to walk away (through the yard)
- Returns back to bed
- Hears chump yanking on the screen to Den Window
- He grabs his shotgun and phone and "can't believe it's go time..."
- Hears the window break, he chambers a round now
- Calmly walks into the Den just as perp comes headfirst through the window, socks on his hands, as he gets up, a Mossburg 500 Persuader (8 shots) is about 5 feet from his face
- "Don't Move MutherF****R"
- "Don't shoot me, I didn't take anything"
- "Don't even move"
- He calls the cops, making sure to keep enough distance so the purp can't lunge and grab the weapon"
- Notifies police of situation and provides complete description of perp
- After about three minutes, perp jumps out of window and runs off
- Police arrive 5 minutes after 911 call
- Perp is not caught even though search occurred

So after talking to my employee it's obvious the perp thought it was an empty home and caught the surprise of his life. My employee said he felt very in control of the situation and if the perp had a weapon, he would have fired if he felt his life was in danger, but he didn't want to shoot him in the bag, nor did he want to chase after him while wearing only underwear. His wife and daughter were gone at the time. He's 24 years old, avid outdoorsman. We're all glad that it ended with no harm to our employee.

your co-worker is good under pressure. i would have ziptied his ass to a tree. again, i need to chech California regs to make sure Zipties are legal...this state blows.

I had my house broken into in May.

My girlfriend came home at 1:30, fed the cats, made some cereal and started to play on her laptop. The cats were going nuts and had their tails all puffed out. Finally, she got up and followed one of them to the basement door it kept running to and found it had been forced open.

Then she walked into the 2nd bedroom and found it a mess, then the master bedroom and it was totally ransacked. They had broken a window in the garage and come in through the basement and went straight for the iPods, jewelry, cash, etc. Apparently, they tried to come in the front windows first, but they are quadruple-paned (noise abatement) and couldn't force them.

Allegedly, they might have seen her come home and jumped out the master bedroom window on the backside of the house.

We got an alarm system the next day, and now I carry a concealed pistol (she doesn't know -- won't allow guns in the house) in the truck in case I come home to the same situation.

Freaking scary. And the feeling of violation is awful. I'm just glad she didn't get hurt.

Your coworker did a great job. I imagine homeowners insurance will cover the window, but there are some terrible people in this world.

 

Not sure how I feel on this topic. I would not have let him run away but I also would not have done something that would have put me and my future in jeopardy.

 

Colorado has the "Make My Day" law, but you still have to clean up all the blood. That ain't fun.

in NC you can blast them before they even enter your house. if they are kicking at your door or crawling in a window its game on. i wouldn't of thought twice that guy would have been dead

 

That's our talk here at work.

He would not have been prosecuted but the perps family would take him to Civil court.

Remember, OJ is innocent according to the State of California...

This time of the year is high season for break-in and all types of scams. You should be alert at all times, but extra alert this time of the year.

 

Do a search for "Castle Law" if you feel your life is threatened, you can shoot first.

 

Castle law in both NC and SC.
If you happen to find yourself uninvited and alive in my house, good luck getting out.

To the OP. Glad everything worked out for the better. Sounds like your guy prob did the right thing.

Here in AZ, state law does not require the victim to be fired upon for the victim to defend himself. If a reasonable person can articulate that they were in fear for their life or a life of another person, he or she is justified in threatening or even using lethal force against the offender.

Thank God for a Pro-gun/ Pro-Law abiding Citizen state..

 

You can't hardly say that you were scared for your life when the guy is running away. It took a lot of Balls for that guy to jump up and run I don't think He'll be back too soon.

 

Yep, you're correct. However he did have a split second when dude made entry through his window, when they were face to face, to identify a threat and make a decision. I wasn't there, so I'm guessing bad guy had not weapon in hand (hense wearing socks on his hands), so he didn't feel threatened. I know I'm a little amped up when ever I have to point my weapon at a Chud.
