TRD/ Magnuson 4.0 Supercharger Tips, Tricks, and Mods

Just shot a message over to Smooth boys for a quote on a set up.

Man I’m about to slam a couple beers just trying to call down after all that night mare. No wonder everyone went away from the URD SuperGrips. ZZ performance looks like they have a nice tool but that is a hefty price for a tool I’ll rarely use. What do those ALTA set ups run normally @TRON

 

Using the right tool makes all the difference. Alta is for mini coopers but fit the 2.5 pulley for our setups just right. It’s basically just a fancy steering puller. And if they fit the pulley correctly then they should remove with no damage. It’s just an example how to do it right. If you go for the jaw puller I’d get a minimum 7ton.

 

That looks like either alternator or the one on the bottom side of the driver side of the block. Near the header. The one that is associated with the starter's wiring harness.

 

Yeah I got it off with the Second 5 ton. After all that work though I think I’m just going to wait out this tropical storm and drive the wife’s car. Plan on ordering either the pulleyboys or smooth pulley quickchange now. I never want to have to go through that again ha! I’ll order a puller tool from whoever I decide on tonight.

 

For what it is worth, I started with a Pully Boys setup but plan on switching over to a Smooth Flow. The hub with Pully Boys has not been consistent with fitment for belt alignment, some got the perfect fit and it lines up nicely at the end of the shaft, other (like me) had to drive the hub farther back on the shaft to clean up the alignment. Mine is still off, but I am not going to press it any farther back, just going to let it ride until I change the setup.

I'm not sure if I ever added that info to page 1 because it's on my small list of updates to do but just in case I'm glad you brought this forward to the most recent page again.

 

You can't go wrong with a Craftsman puller.

 

Agreed. It's a solid piece of toolery.

 

+1. Several of us found Craftsman's Five-Ton-Ratcheting Puller very effective. Unfortunately, Sears demise appears to have made availability somewhat limited.

 

It's a shame too because some of those craftsman tools that they made were specialty clutch when it came down to the wire. It's too bad they went out of business.

 

For some reason I always thought Craftsman was a Canadian only thing. I'm kind of disappointed that it's not.

edit: or was that MasterCraft? Do you guys have that down there?

 

They sell craftsman at princess auto these days. Don't know if the quality is the same or not. My craftsman stuff is all 15-20 years old.

Mastercraft is Canadian tire.

 

Oh okay. Canadian tire: the bringer of OK mid-low-range sh!t.

The warranty is great though and their wrenches are cheap on sale. I never buy anything more complicated than that from them unless its not Mastercraft.

 

Yes. And they have some decent engine oil. And that goes massively on-sale quite often.

 

Craftsman, when Sears went under, went from being made in America to being made in China. Then Craftsman was bought by Stanley Black and Decker, who gave Lowes a 15year contract to sell Craftsman tools. I believe I read somewhere that Black and Decker was disappointed in the quality dip when production moved to China, and they are trying to bring 100% of hand tool production back to America.

All that aside, you can now find Craftsman at your local Lowes.

 

I just bought a craftsman tool chest from Lowes and it says made in Missouri. From the packaging, they seem to be attempting to emphasize that some of their products are made in USA again after the China deal no doubt cost them sales.

yeah talked with Nate today and placed an order with him for a pulley. We’ll see how quick I can get it. I’d like to be driving the truck again soon.
