Haha, awesome tip. It started. Roughly but it started so now I know what the problem is and don't have to wait and pay for a tow. At the shop now. Thought about doing it myself but just had a minor surgery and really can't deal with it now.

Just got my truck back. Wow did it turn over fast. Replaced the whole starter. They don't do parts repair, can't warranty it. Was hoping to just have the contacts replaced but oh well. They brought it into the shop and said they tested the battery, relays, fuses, alt., starter, etc... and everything checked out fine and it started multiple times for them. So I said go ahead and do it because it's been tough to start on occasion for the last year or so even though it only actually did not start once before this. Since tapping the starter got it going again, I'm 90% sure that was the issue. I even paid the core charge to keep the old starter so I could open it up and take a look for peace of mind. Maybe I can replace the contacts and sell it.

 

I know but I just like the power and less gas money.
The crap I throw at it anyway will probably be only 50k

 

Well, the old starter did not look "worn", more like just dirty. I did not get a before pic but it was dusty. Just wiped it down and this is the result:


So I supposed it could have just been dirty contacts. Anyway, wonder what this is worth on the TW market?

To me, the contact is worn. Small one looks like more wear than the larger. I’d bet, new contacts would make that thing as good as new. Unfortunately, no one rebuilds them anymore around here that I know of.

 

Maybe post a knew thread on it and see if you can get a hookup.

Test it how? I would need to supply some kind of electrical current to it right?

 

I guess I was looking at the square bolt head and not the circular part. Makes sense as that is where the plunger makes "contact". But I dont know what a new one looks like.

The ones I’ve replaced are flat without that step. The step is burning from the arc when the plunger contacts it. Usually one side wears faster and that makes the starter fail in one of 2 ways. Click, click, click or starter won’t disengage.

 

BTW, you can get some oxygen free copper strap and make your own contacts if you want. As long as the contact face is flat and level with each other, they’ll do the job. I actually made larger ones for my former truck (Cummins), as they would wear through them quickly.

Well it worked mostly (some rough or slow starts) for the last 8 months except for 2 times that it flat out didn't. Plus I paid a shop to swap in a new one because I just had minor surgery and couldn't attempt it myself. Difficult to access. So I won't be reinstalling it. But you are welcome to test it yourself and if you find it acceptable, toss a few bucks my way. Otherwise I have no use for it. Probably put it up in the TW marketplace if you decide you ultimately don't want it.

 

Thanks but you should put it up on marketplace, I'm probably going to do something similar when mine goes eventually.
Then I'll have mine to rebuild as a spare.
