the way I usually work with my engineer is I propose a course of action or way I want to do something and he runs the numbers to see if we can make it work as I want to do it or whether we need to make some alterations

 

I've put up thousands of these Simpson joist hangers and have never seen the orange clip. Looks like it would be good to keep it in place when installing. On my deck this summer, I used the Simpson 1 1/4" screws. Worked perfect. I'll have to look for the clips.

 

the orange part just a spring tensioner to temporarily squeeze/hold the tie on the joist?

Strapping went down this morning . On the piece that is at the top of the 2 in 12 pitch , I wanted to butt it up tight to the lowest piece on the 5 in 12 pitch so I could nail them together but wanted to leave an airflow path so the lower roof could vent through the upper roof to the ridge vent .

Where there is the double sub-fascia , the rafter bays are not continuous so I left 3" vent slots in the lowest piece of strapping on the 5 in 12 roof aligned to the centres of the 2 in 12 rafter bays .

To allow for air to get from the lower bays , over the sub-fascia and into the upper rafter bays to vent , I marked the vent slot locations on the upper piece of the 2 in 12 strapping and hogged out vent 'scoops' with the Polish Plane .




Installed top piece of strapping viewed from below , you can see how the air can travel from the lower rafter bay up through the strapping 'scoop' , into the vent slots and over the sub-fascia into the upper rafter bays

Should work to create a draft venting the roof drawing cooler air from the shaded outdoor portion. I like it.

 

Do you put a screen over those scoops or some other way of keeping the creepy crawlies out?

 

actually makes me think the workshop's position on the lot, would make a great place to use leftover materials to build.

then again your south exposure is all shaded from what I can tell, so maybe the shop not the best place.

Just an update for those following along at home , not going to be a lot going on at the shop this week , have some other pressing things to attend to like getting my firewood for this year squared away , winterizing my house , working on some drawings for my next client build and taking an online course for CPD to renew my builder's license that expires soon

Supposed to be rain all this week anyway and building is watertight so no worries that way

I'm going to prep my fascias and get them on if we get a break in the rain , roofers are ready to come whenever fascias are on
