Clicking from rear at low speed w/ audio-video

TW friends, this popped up this morning for me (at least, I just noticed it this morning).

Driving at low speeds, there’s a distinct clicking noise that comes from the rear somewhere. I’ve checked the tires for debris (clean) and can’t see anything obviously out of place. Once I go over 5-10 mph or so, it’s gone. Only heard at parking lot speeds. No change in sound when changing direction either. It’s pretty loud.

The only big thing done To the truck lately was change my wheels to the new 3rd gen OR wheels a week ago. Also just had all the lugs retorqued at the dealer, sound still there.

Maybe someone’s encountered this before? Thanks for your insight!



My truck is 2008 DCSB OR 4x4, 203,000. New rear driveshaft at 130k.

Hopefully they take it easy on you.
I’d probably pull the drum off the rear and take a look.

Keep us posted on the diagnosis.
Hopefully it’s something simple.

 

Result - the tire place (America's Tire) that mounted and balanced the new wheels didn't put on a wheel weight correctly, which was causing the weight to rub, somewhere. They rebalanced all the tires and no more click!

Also 4 loose lugs on the front right wheel this morning...!

Not thrilled with my local A-T at the moment, and they're usually fine.

 

This is a bit concerning?
Do you own a Torque Wrench?
If not, I’d buy one and check them again in 50 miles.

If they were torqued correctly the first time and then rechecked again, something probably isn’t right.
Hopefully it was the Tire Shop being negligent, because having lug nuts come loose continuously isn’t good.

 

I agree - I've had the wheels on for less than 75 miles, and I checked the lugs this morning in a parking lot when I heard the clicking while running errands. I found 4 loose lugs on one wheel that I could move by hand!!! I tightened with my tire iron in the parking lot the best I could and limped to the nearest mechanic a couple miles away to re-torque all wheels so I could drive home on the freeway.

The clicking continued, then I took the video and then went to my home dealer to get an inspection (the clicking was loud). Then the dealer found the wheels weights all screwed up causing the racket. Their opinion was that the wheel weights were improperly applied and balanced badly by the tire place.

The loose lugs combined with misapplied wheels weights makes me think negligence on the tire place's part.

Not to mention they aired all four of my tires up to 38 psi cold when they mounted my new wheels. I've been in touch with corporate...

You're right that I should keep checking the lugs to make sure.
