OIL IN MY WHEEL WELL

I have a 07 Tacoma 4x4 dual cab, and noticed today my drivers side rear wheel, and wheel well have oil in them. I crawled under the truck and everything was clean and it appears the oil is coming from behind the brake drum.. before pulling everything apart, i wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem and what the solution was?

ya that's almost def an axle seal, not uncommon at all. probably a good idea to replace the brake shoes well your in there if not be sure to do a really good job cleaning them up.

No.. its mandatory to replace the shoes if oil got in the drum. You can't clean a brake shoe.. Not well.. not worth it anyway..

Really .. axle seals are really a common problem? WOW.. Welcome to america toyota?
I hope that's "a common problem for people running 35" swampers.
I don't remember EVER replacing an axle seal due to failure on anything. Bearings die first and then just do a rebuild.

 

Ah, it would appear you were thrown under the bus... I'd take credit for that one, it looked like fun! I live near the city so I can't get away with stuff like that, damn neighbors would call the cops

 

we actually see a fair amount of bad axle seals on stock trucks almost always within waranty thought, and if not usually very high mileage, (alot of times the axles are full of water, so possible abuse) and I agree i would def replace the shoes, never have done one at work without new shoes. but honestly if it was my truck i would probably try cleaning them in hopes to save a buck... but I'm also not afraid to do it twice.
