    It's a matter of scale. There are mountains in those craters that you see that are bigger than the mountains you are lookin at 10-20 miles away. The moon is big, and a lot those craters are bigger than a lot of states/countries. To further put that into perspective. Humans have detonated over 2,000 nuclear bombs, the craters of which are still visible on google maps. That said you can see very few from orbit, and none from the moon.
