I will be taking this to the dealer since it is under warranty, but want to go in educated (somewhat). If I drive up a hill and stop. Leaving the transmission in D and let the truck roll backward about 8 feet. Stop. then hit the gas - I go no where and hear a clicking in the front left (I think). Putting the transmission into park and back to D seems to "reset" everything. this is in 2H. I have not tested it in 4x4.

    Any ideas?

2020 Tacoma TRD crew w/ 6' box and 3 inch lift )dealer installed) 1k miles.

    Any help is appreciated.

Why would you be rolling back in D?
The transmission in D is meant to go forward, not reverse. That's why they give you neutral and reverse.

fair question - 8 feet is probably a gross over estimate. I have a steep driveway and at times it rolls back a few feet - I'm not reversing the truck in drive and I always completely stop before changing direction. Even at start off if I don't use two feet with the brake, or park brake, it will roll back and not engage. It is under acceleration not while rolling back. AGAIN, I am not going any great distance - it is steep. Sierra mountains near Yosemite. If I replicate with my Chevy it rolls back and trans locks in and goes forward. No issues.

Some trucks come with hill assist and it makes a horrible racket.
I have done it once or twice on a steep incline on dirt, the truck just stalled on me. I was puzzled, until I looked down and saw I forgot to throw it in reverse.
I don't think I have any long term damage, but I am also not taking it apart to find out.
Btw.... I went a lot further than 8 ft. Probably a good 20 yards, plus sliding as the brakes and tires grabbed.

If your transmission is filled up properly , its not going to do any damage since everything is lubricated properly .
The torque converter may not be at stall stage on a hill .
First thing I would check is the fluid level .
Because you are on a hill in your driveway , it takes the transmission pump a little longer to build up enough pressure to keep the truck from rolling backwards . Not only does the pump have to supply 250 PSI to the reverse clutch and fill the direct clutch with fluid , but it also has to charge the torque converter and lubricate your transmission while the transmission is cold and the fluid is not as viscous as it gets when it warms up . Your transmission pump is very busy on initial start up . You are far better starting your truck and moving forward .
The suction port at the transmission filter is located at the center of the transmission . If the trans has a low fluid condition on a hill , I can see your issue for sure .
Try backing your truck into the driveway on your next parking venture and verify the transmission goes into forward on initial start up .

I consider this " not normal " however , we are starting to see this complaint more and more at Tacoma World with the 3rd gen .
The converter must have a higher stall stage in comparison to the 2nd gen . Gonna do some digging

I notice a bit of delay to engage drive when starting up and shifting from park to drive, especially on the boat ramp. I make sure I feel positive engagement before I release that parking brake. for sure

just like you are not supposed to use the transmission with no brakes to hold you on a hill... you are not supposed to let an automatic transmission stay in a forward drive gear, and let the hill, gravity, whatever, roll you backward. you could, will, are doing damage to the trans, internally... whether you want to believe it or not. From experience on a steep grade with impending doom, the truck will roll forward ever so lightly, but I also had my foot on the brake to feel it engage. it will then stop and you can then put pressure on the gas to start moving backwards. Again, i did not just let it roll forward at its own speed because that was not an option at the time
