Can the 3rd gen convert easily from auto to MT?

Swap trans, make interior space for shifter..

Would it require MT ECU and other electronics?

I imagine the physical components are the easy part. Especially since you can swap out the interior panels. But yeah, I believe the computer components are where you'll run into issues.

I've looked into doing the same with my 2006, and basically you CAN do it if you really really want to, but it'll cost 5 grand easy, and devalue the truck at least another 5.

You need a trans, possibly a t-case, drive shafts, interior bits, a pedal assembly just to list the big items. A dealer told me that installing a pedal assembly requires removing the whole dash

This mainly, no one will want to buy a manual swapped truck. There are just too many possible issues. If you never plan to sell then it wont matter

But, your looking at alot of money wasted when you could just sell your truck and get a manual already made from the factory. I bet you could find a dealer that would do a straight swap as a auto will sell better than a manual will anyways**

** people who want manual tacomas search them out, 95% of owners (not tacomaworld people) dont want a manual, so there is a larger group of buyers for a auto.

I converted it by going to the dealer and telling them to find me a MT. Then I gave them my AT. It was an easy conversion.

Simple answer is yes. With money.

ECU, Harness, interior shifter, pedals including brake, and Trans is big big money.

The only time I’ve ever considered it was on a ‘63 Ford Falcon I used to own. On that car it appeared to be doable for a guy working on his back in his garage, though I got rid of the car before attempting it. On a modern car (or truck) with computers, sensors, wire harnesses, etc. I would personally never consider it.

Dont know why you need to swap to manual if toyota makes one. It is cheaper, faster and less issues to just buy a manual.

Manual? Why would you want that? Slap a CVT on it.

Much easier to just trade it in for a MT.

Toyota should have put the Camry 8 speed AT in the 3rd gen Tacoma but I don't think it was available until 2018. Whichever the case, they tuned the Camry 3.5L AT to 301hp and same torque and it's awesome and 900lb less weight.

The Camry is FWD though, doubt it would match up with a RWD Platform. I'm sure the next Gen will have some sort of upgraded multi-speed transmission.

Most definitely. They also put a cvt in the 4cyl and have an AWD option which is 4cyl only. I would have loved an AWD 3.5L like the Sienna.
